Why do some drives sound like fireworks going off when there is any kind of file transfer/seek action going on?

No it's not the tick of death lol

I have a WD 750GB 'Black' and it's a good drive but it's very noisy

I had a Black, and it was both noisy and vibratory. It died prematurely, to be replaced under warranty with a (non)black WD 2.5" drive that was vibratory, but quieter and still works. I also have an old Seagate 250Gb drive I keep for 'experimental' installs that sounds pretty bad. Noisiest drive I can recall was around '96-'97 where I could hear the drive movements across an office from about 20 feet away - I think it may have been made by Omega.

mac mini has a horribly noisy HDD. Luckily, it is not for much longer... I have 480GB SSD on the way and with some luck it will get installed properly.

I just wanted to say, SSDs are now the way to go for regular work, maybe except longer term large capacity storage
