No more tax discs

Much as it pains me to say it, would be so much easier if they just put 3p (or whatever) on a litre and did away with it altogether. No evading posible then, no awkward administration. And the tax is proportional to the fuel you use, a bit like the current banded based on CO emissions tax system.

Easy enough.
I see it also says in there that the paper part of the licence is to be done away with.

Suits me. I haven't displayed my tax disk on the motorbike for years. Stop me needign to carry it around (and yes technically I know it's failure to display).

Agree with this - much easier collection. It would only be a bout 1p though?

if I'm paying 1p per liter, that would only make my "contribution" per year £28.60 (give or take)
Whilst I'm happy to pay that, I suspect it'd need to be much more.

In your gas guzzling, clapped out, old tractor you're probably right. :exit:

I travel about 20k-25k miles a year. I have a motorbike (£80 tax), a mazda 6 estate (£30 tax) and the TVR, (£230 tax). at an average of 40mpg then I'd use 625 gallons a year, or just over 2837 litres, so on 1p a litre it would be approx £28

Hum, have to be 10p per litre then wouldn't it to make sense. However I doubt any givernment would introduce that, mind you if we factored in the savings in civil servants to administer

Anything that makes something simpler is a good idea but I can't see it having a big impact on the dodgers. There are folks who are happy to drive with an outdated or no tax disc and take the risk they won't get spotted. I think they are also likely to risk they won't get picked up by a camera under the new system.

Dave

I thought even with the paper disks you still get fined if you don't renew or SORN. The cameras have been round to pick you up for a good few years too.I'm not sure this makes a massive difference

from what i understand it doesnt rely on getting caught.

from what ive read if its not SORN'd then you have to be in the computer as taxed otherwise its a fine.

I do exactly same on my bike.
There is no need for paper versions all the info the authorities needs is now available on a database. Good to see they finally using technology.

My tax disk runs out on 30/9. It's free. I shall miss getting that nice letter from the DVLA with it in.

I guess now I will have to tell them every year that I still don't have to pay tax because they said so. Or risk a fine.

Yeah discs on bikesvare a real pain. My holder is bolted together with about 8 3mm bolts and every year is a real pain to change the disc, which I have to do before my next ride.

But tbh bikes shouldnt pay tax. There are cars with bigger engines that take up 3x the space, are heavier to cause more road damage, still cause congestion and are used more than most bikes and yet pay less tax if any at all. My Daytona 600 ( thats 599cc) costs me £55 a year and I get no where near 3000 a year at the moment.

You seem to be under the mistaken belief that road tax/vehicle excise duty is used to improve the roads.

Also if you buy a used car not only do you have to phone your insurance company before driving it home, which is a pain in the are as it it, you also have to sort tax. Think of all the money government will make as well. You buy a car that's taxed until the end of December at the beginning of October. The seller gets November and December refunded and the seller has to start from the 1 St of October so October has been paid twice. Robbing bar stewards(n)

Cobblers
God, you bikers want it all.
Don't want to pay at tolls....far too much trouble.
Don't want to pay in car parks..."but the bike's only little"
Must I take off my helmet in a petrol station?
et al...........
:-P

Helmet off at petrol station is just a right pain in arse!

I pay more for my bike tax than I do my volvo v50 where is the logic in it?

Do you want to queue behind a bike that has to stop at a toll booth while the rider dismounts to extract the toll from under a full waterproof suit then redresses before remounting, starting and pulling away? In pay and display car parks, where should we put the tickets so they can't be nicked? (A problem also faced in a convertible!) As for fuel stations, I usually wear an open face helmet and go in with the cash in my hand. If they don't want me to go in to pay, they'd better have a window for me to hand the cash over!

I would agree to just add the tax to fuel and scrap this system completely. The only reason it is there is to make sure people barely using their cars (i.e. caravans) pay a lot and to make money for companies running the scheme (I'm guessing IBM or one of their competitors). So you could think that 20% of your tax goes to IT company. This is bureaucracy. At least we don't have motorway tolls like in France (only Bristol has it for its major bridges) but torries wouldn't mind starting charging to get rid of lesser cars than their BMW's and mercs.

but you have more fun on your bike, don't you? All the 'fun' things are taxed.

d.

Sounds good, I've always thought the crippling VAT paid on these fine cars should mean they get special lanes to expidite their process, special Mercedes only lanes and special Mercedes driver speed limits. That would work :D

Or a tax disc, you get to opt for certain membership rights, £0/yr standard speed limits £100/yr 10mph faster on NSL routes, £200yr 20mph faster on NSL routes, £1000/yr unlimited speed on NSL routes. If only...

How about NSL is 40 like for Honda Jazz and you then pay me £200 to drive at 60? :)

Bikes already have an unlimited speed limits don't they? ;)

And yes far mar fun on the bike but never got my head round why I pay about £80 a year for my gsxr750 and £20 a year for my 1.6 volvo v50!

Volvo is 2009 and gsxr is 2010 no idea of CO2 but bikes go on engine size so because it's more than 600 it's the upper tax bracket. Where as cars go on CO2.

Ah fair dos. I guess the thought is larger CC bike + higher rpm = more co2. Maybe.

If it's any consolation my derv just cost me more than both of yours combined :D

Yeah my other halfs 207 costs more than my car and two bikes cost to tax! So I get 3 vehicles for price of her car [emoji2]

Yes it's great that I dont have to mess about with tax disc holder's on the bike any more

I don't know what the emissions figures are on bikes but modern ones all have cat converters with very efficient engines but I pay much more to tax the bikes than our car

Isn't that the way refunds work now? The only difference is you no longer have the option of transferring tax with the vehicle

Surely waterproofs come with pockets, gloves usually have a money pouch too.

Truly wouldn't bother me at the tolls....you're just another vehicle.
Parking stub? Not my problem. If you had to pay, perhaps the manufacturers would come up with something :-)
Helmet removal? Not exactly rocket science. :-P

Ah, those were the days....

Living in Brighton and riding a BMW R75 and off to a rally in Essex. Load bike, put 20p toll on righthand cylinder, put on helmet and gloves. Ride to Dartford tunnel, pick 20p off cylinder with glove and hand to cashier...............

:D

That's just showing off :D

I bet the cashier dropped it sharpest though, I guess it may have been a tad warm by then

Noooo.... Fuel is expensive enough, and my 1 litre daily drive has dirt cheap tax, and because the Mustang is an import with no EU official CO2 figs... so is that. so.... shhhh!

Easy enough.
I see it also says in there that the paper part of the licence is to be done away with.

Thank god for that.... bloody useless thing. The really stupid thing, is that officially, the photo card part of your license is not officially a form of ID unless you also show the counterpart... thus making it useless.
