Nissin Di866 Pro MkII Remote Flash help

I have a Canon 60d camera and want to fire a Nissin Di866 Pro MKII wirelessly as a remote flash without the pop up flash on the camera. The flash mounted remotely works just fine when I use the camera's popup flash, but doesn't fire without the cameras popup flash. I have tried setting the Nissin in master & remote settings, but this has made no difference.

Here are my settings:

Camera Menu - Flash Control
Flash Firing : Enable

Built In Flash Func Setting
Flash Mode : E-TTL II
Shutter sync : 1st Curtain
E-TTL II meter : Evaluate
Wireless Function Set at remote flash (tried popup & remote setting, this works only when popup flash operates)
Channel : 1
Firing Group : All

Flash Settings
From the main menu select Wireless
Master settings
Channel 1
A - Master

Tried with the Remote settings as below

The flash and camera are 100% compatible and the flash is new. I have also tried with the MkI version of this flash and cant get this to work either. Appreciate any help in trying to get this to work.
 
The pop up needs to be up to send the messages, are you leaving it up?
 
Phil is correct the pop up needs to be active. Are you worried about the on board flash affecting the lighting set up ? I suspect it is a minimal flash output that is used to trigger because i have never noticed any overpowering effect from it any time i have used my Di866 or 430exii off camera.

If you really have a specific setup that needs the pop up off then it will have to be radio triggers im afraid.
 
Yes, it's the pop-up that masters the remote gun by way of pre-flashes for control and exposure setting so it will always fire.

But you can disable it from firing a main flash during the exposure, although it will put out a tiny bit of light even in this mode, but it's extremely weak. You'll only see in reflections off shiny things and won't influence the overall exposure unless you're very close.
 
Thanks guys, works a treat. I didn't know that the popup flash needed to be up. And as you said, flash output is miniscule.
