As my budget(wife) wont allow be to get a cannon 430ex, i was wondering what the best alternative would be out of the nissin di622 or the sigma ef610, or is there any other make or model around at the same prize band(£120) what would be a better buy.

I can't make a comparison, but I do have the Nissin for my Nikon and it does a great job - especially when you consider the features VS price difference of the Nikon/Cannon speedlight. I'd consider myself at the top end of beginner in terms of skill and I can't see myself needing to upgrade it anytime soon. Of course, this depends on if you want to do fancier lighting stuff putting flashes into groups and controlling them all remotely etc.
On camera it is flawless, the flash trigger (the Nissin flashes when it detects the on-camera flash) seems to work very well and I also use it with some cheapo eBay remote triggers no problem.
In conclusion, I give the Nissin a thumbs up!

I too have the 622mk2, but I have not used the sigma, not sure how the compare on paper, but the 622 has been great so far. Fires as slave, and on my RF603s every time. Batteries lasted longer than I expected as well.

I'd go for the Nissin as well. I've got a Nissin Di866 and a Canon 580EXII for my 7D and 5D2. Most of the time I put the Canon on the 5D2 but the Nissin is a hell of a flash in it's own right. I had a550D that I gave to the wife a few months back and brought a Di622 for that as for the price the Nissin range are brilliant.
I got the Di622 for £95 + p&p off ebay and its brilliant. I did a test while holding it about 2 feet away from my face and pointed away, hit the button and felt the flash of heat at that distance and couldnt see properly for half an hour. Wont try that again in a hurry. Seriously good flash though.
