I've been kindly lent a WT-4 unit which I have plans to try out at an event i'm covering. I have managed to get the unit working when using thumbnail mode but when using transfer mode I get an error light on the WT-4and an error on the D300 can't connect to PC. I am using Windows 7 any one come across this?

Any help most appreciated.

I can't help as I haven't got one but I'd buy one if they were not so expensive. I am sure they would sell far more of them if they reduced the price to a reasonable level !!

you might have more luck on the event photographer's society forum, they use wireless kit a lot more than people here.

Cowsaki, yes, but all the professionals who -need- one will pay the £££ that is charged atm, because they -need- to, so nikon don't have any incentive to do so, other than for the amateur market, that is more the region of the eyefi :)

Maybe if they dropped the price to £249 they might sell ten times as
Many and make mire profit!

The eyefi doesn't work with cf only cameras without the adapter which makes them flakey!

Are you looking to actually remote control the camera? or do you simply want it to store the files remotely on a PC on your LAN?

I don't have the WT-4, but I do have the WT-3 for my D200, and the way I've got that configured up, as all I want is transfer to a PC not remote control, is to have it just transfer the files to an FTP server setup on my laptop. It sends over JPGs to the computer, and RAW files stay on my card.

I've found that's the most reliable method. Nikon aren't really known for keeping up to date with the latest windows versions and compatibility with their software.

Hi All :D

Thanks for the responses.

Had a quick search on the EPS forum and doesn't seem to be any info but may register and post the question (I know how knowledgeable and good the advice on TP is so will use EPS as last resort) Thx for the info.

I was hoping to get the WT-4 to upload any images automatically to my laptop to enable viewing whilst I'm still out taking more photos of the event. I can get this to work using the thumbnail select mode without any problem but this is a manual operation and means having to select the images and start the transfer from the laptop (something else for my potential assistant to deal with)? This is not a real problem but as Cowaski has pointed out this is an expensive bit of kit and therefore I was hopefull of this being possible. At the moment I have set it up as an ad-hoc wireless network, so will look at the ftp possibility:shrug:

If the FTP software is running on the laptop, then you can use Lightroom to automatically view the new images I believe.

I like it especially when I'm shooting at events, because if it goes out of transmittion range, anay JPG files are stored on the memory card, then transmitted as soon as I get a connection back.

Would filezilla be ok to use as ftp software .... not had much experience setting up an ftp site? :bonk:

Yeah, but you'll be wanting to use FileZilla SERVER, not the regular FileZilla FTP client. :)

Before I go ahead with the ftp server config. Was wondering if the transfer mode only works using ftp or should it be able to transfer files just using windows? The thumbnail view mode works fine, so thinking I may have to use this route as the filezilla server is unsupported for windows 7.

I believe you can just connect and transfer using the Nikon tethering software, although it's not something I really tried.

I went the FTP route as I didn't need remote control of the camera, it's a protocol that's been around for 40 years, and just works.

"Unsupported" doesn't necessarily mean FileZilla doesn't actually work. Did you install it and try it? If it doesn't work for you, there's plenty of alternate FTP server apps out there. :)

John,

Thx for your continued assistance, I will try the filezilla ftp route and see if this gets round the problem.

No problem, good luck :)
