Ok lovely peeps, novice Debbie back here to ask some advice please......

Want a nice wide angle for my basic entry level
D3100 mount. Am truly aware that Nikon is superior but I'm new to this and wondering if I'll be noticing a HUGE difference in my amateur photography if I went for the Tamron equivalent.

Nikon=£600
Tamron=£350 ish

I can stretch to Nikon in my budget but have no money left to play around with after for filters etc.

Both have had good 4 star plus reviews!

Oh and I've no idea why CSC is there or what it means!

I've had the Tamron 10-24 and it was probably the worst lens I have ever owned. Its known for being soft. I never got any really good pics with it.
Have you considered the Sigma 10-20? Thats what I use now and its far superior to the Tamron.
I've not tried the Nikon (yet) but probably will upgrade the Sigma to it eventually as I want to go all Nikon lenses slowly.

I think if you get the Tamron, you will regret it and will always want better.

Thanks Jules..... Good advice! Appreciated and Phil... Googling now :0)

Just be aware that the Tokina 11-16 won't auto focus on your camera though a new version is coming that will. That'll likely blow the budget though. Auto focus isn't particularly important on such a wide angle but I could understand if you want it.

The Sigma 10-20 would get my vote way ahead of the Tamron. There is also the Nikon 12-24 which is a nice lens.

And one last dark horse option, have a read up about the Tokina 12-24. The Mk2 version will auto focus on your camera. Never used one but it's meant to be excellent.

I'd put in the mix the 12-24 Nikkor.

When I had Nikon kit I was using the Tamron all the time, I really liked the lens contrary to plenty of people opinions of it. It was sharp and liked the colours it produced. However on a lower end Nikon body (a D40 but I expect the D3xxx to be the same, not sure what you are shooting with) it had massive problems with the AF, and yes I know I should manual focus with an UWA but call me lazy I was not.

So I ended up buying a s/h 12-24 Nikkor from here and I have to say from the UWA lenses I have had (currently a Sigma 10-20 on a K-5) the Nikkor was the best by quite a margin. Both in terms of IQ and AF speed. It is very expensive new but s/h you can get it at good prices although it does not come up very often.

I never got any really good pics with it.

Thank you all! Head is full and eyes busy reading all about the lenses mentioned in the feed. X

Sigma 10-20mm f4.5-5.6 gets my vote also.

throwing another one into the mix, i have got Sigma 12-24mm myself, fantastic lens, just too big and heavy. so avoid, lol.

wide angle lenses are hard to use, you should play with one at Jessops (or similar) and be sure you want one before purchasing. if you end up with a lot of shots with more stuff in the frame, the photo is actually worse. you can just use stitched panorama.

you need to be sure you can make the photo special by having meaningful foreground. i am still learning, but from what i've learnt so far, something like these is what wide angle lenses are designed for.

Thanks...a few people have suggested the sigma.... I might end up going with the Nikon, I've saved for it and even though it's a lot more £££ I guess an all Nikon kit can only do me good. Lovely shot BTW, clear,crisp and sharpe
