I have a Nikon D700 and a few SB-900's .. as we know they can be operated wirelessly from the D700 commander setup ... what i want to know is do top end Canon DSLR's operate their 580 flashguns in a similar way or is the Transmitter ST-E2 needed. Other than that is the Canon wireless flash system as versatile as the Nikon system in use ..

thanks ..

For canon you need to have a 550ex/580ex mki/580ex mkii or an ST-E2 on the camera to control the other flashes :(

Using the 580ex mkII on a 40d/50d/5dmkii opens up a wireless flash control menu that is awesome! Very easy to set up different power levels for each group etc. Its a joke though that you have to spend £300 on a flash that in most cases where your controlling off camera flashes wont be fired!!!

I personally think they really need to update the ST-E2 as it doesnt provide a lot of the functions the 580ex ii does regardless of having a flash.

thanks for that .... i was thinking of a couple of 580EX's and a ST-E2 to control them ... are they as versatile as the Nikon system and what range do you get from the ST-E2 .. ?

cant comment on the versatilitie but rage for the st-e2 can be down to 2 or 3 ft depending on lighting conditions indoors in a averagly lit room its ok most of the time but if your out doors in bright sun shine, well good luck

ohh and the st-e2 battery is stupidly expensive:bang:

The canon system is IR based wheras the Nikon uses bursts of light from the flash which gives it more range

In EdGary's flash thread there was discussion about the lack of high speed sync (or 2nd curtain sync?) when Canon's flashes are used wirelessly.

I'm not familiar with the capabilities of the current Pentax lineup but all sync modes are available with the early bodies when the flash is used wirelessly and with the *ist D the popup flash can be used as controller, rather than a dedicated external flash.

AFAIK so long as your controlling the off camera flashes with a canon master you can have FP mode (HSS) or rear curtain sync.

Ive been pretty impressed using my 2 550ex's in master and slave, had them outdoors at sun rise one morning and able to fire the off camera one from about 8-10m away :D

Had the opportunity to use a 580ex II as a commander controlling 4 flashes in 3 groups and it really is the job for controlling canon off camera flashes. Similar menu to Nikon's CLS, we just have to pay £300 to get it!

In my opinion i would ditch the ST-E2 and get a 430ex in its place and use the 580ex as a commander, more functionality (3groups vs 2, in camera menu, flash :p ) and better range than the ST-E2

Canon wireless can do HSS but it cannot do 2nd curtain sync (The option is disabled as soon as you put the flash into master mode).

Nikon wireless can do rear sync.

Agreed that using a 580EXII as a master is far better than using an ST-E2 (Apart from the cost) for the reasons stated above.

Cheers.

Yep, Nikon rules.

Those of you folks who have known me for some time will know that those words are not easily spoken...but very true since the D3:thumbs:
