AFAIK you can only use the lenses manually (manual AF & manual aperture).
I have one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07HC1N77C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it's worked fine for lenses with and without an aperture ring. In the case of a G lens you will need to use the click ring to set aperture manually.

Thanks for this ancient_mariner but I was really looking for an adapter that would work with autofocus.

Unfortunately it's one of those "I wouldn't start from here" requirements. Nikon-to-E adapters are not in the same league as Canon-to-E and the A7 is poor at handling adapted lenses anyway. The A7 II & III are much better but the adapters are still poor....
