All,

I have a sailing event coming up, I wont actually be sailing in the event, but it seems like a good opportunity to get some practice in the genre. It's a University event ordeal, nothing ocean going (it'll be on a reservoir on the outskirts of Derby). Anyway, does anyone have any experience of the TC 20 III on the 200 f/2 specifically? I'm considering getting one that'll get me to 400mm and close it down a stop to f5.6 it seems the easiest way to get some extra reach - I'll have the 70-200 on the d810 or I'll use my 1dxii with a 70-200.

Does anyone have any experience? The sailing / racing should be done by 5pm, I am (hoping) the weather will be ok and 5.6 or even f4 will be sufficient - I'll be shooting on the D5 so not too worried about pushing iso's.

Thanks!
Chris

If only for a day I'd hire a 200-500mm for use on the D810/D5. It's not too expensive to buy if your thinking of long term.
Great lens and will get you to 500mm f5.6. The 2.0TC does soften the image quite a bit.

Thanks for the advice - I am in two minds, I have heard great things about the 2-500 not sure how fast the af is.

As it's only for one day, I may use the 200 f2 on the D810 and set the camera to DX, that's get me a little extra reach and still have plenty of resolution.

Thanks,
Chris

200-500 is fast enough for birds in flight so sailing should be fine.
2x converter will certainly give a ht to AF and IQ.

It's easy to forget how versatile the 70-200 is isn't it? Past few years I have taken the Nikkor 80-400 and 200-500 with me to Goodwood, this year the 70-200s on my D500 and K-1 and just realising most of the pictures were taken at focal lengths <100 mm....

A lot lighter too..
