Thinking of getting one of these but looking at the compatibility chart it does not mention the 80-200 does anyone know if it will auto focus with this lens :shrug:

Yes to the 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S

No to any other version of the 80-200. Actually it won't physically mount, let alone AF :)

I've used the 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S and the 1.7x but I don't recall ever using them together!

I found the 1.7x pretty good on the 70-200 VR and the 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S is optically pretty much identical so it should be fine - stop down from f/4.8 (340mm wide open with this TC) to at least f/7.1 to get really decent IQ.
