Hi all,

Been looking for a while to get a Nikon flash and finally but the bullet and ordered one which I received today. Only spent a couple of hours so far trying out, but really impressed with it so far!

The only thing I have realised its it's going to be a steep learning curve, so can anyone give me any tips or point me in the direction of any good tutorials?

Thanks in advance!

I use one and find it to be everything I need. It's as good 99% of the time as my SB800s, which is testament to how good it is.

Tips? Depends on how you intend to use it.... if you've never used flash before I'd check out Strobist and the 101 section, which tells you how a flash works (albeit biased to off-camera flash).

What do you intend to shoot with it?

I intend to shoot portraits with it, not studio but mainly various indoor and outdoor locations. Also been roped into doing a friends wedding in June which I'm very nervous about!

Thanks for the links, I'll have a read through those. Looking forward to opening a new avenue to my photography!

Info is good :)

Indoors I'd look at using the swivel/tilt function to bounce light off walls. You can play around with the subject-to-wall distance and that will determine how the shadows look. Basically, the nearer the subject tot the wall, the bigger the light source (the bounce off the wall) will appear... big light sources produce softer shadows, small light sources (bare flash) produce hard shadows. Bouncing light demands more power so increase ISO indoors to avoid draining the batteries too quickly.

Outdoors, a good tip is to shoot in shade (under a tree for example) because the flash then becomes the dominant light source and you have more control.

That's great, thanks for all the useful info! I'll be having a play around over the next few day's so I'll post some pics up for some cc!
