Having just bought the SB600 (cheers Kerso) and a i-TTL cord (cheers FITP) I will soon be looking to get a diffuser for it.

It seems I have two main types to choose from, either a material universal one such as this

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/50441/show.html

or a plastic one such as this (obviously pictured for different flash)

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/73413/show.html

Is there any real advantages that one has over the other, and if I decide to get either of the types suggested, is there a significant difference between some of the cheaper ones on ebay when compared to some of the more expensive ones.

It will be mostly used on the flash when taking portraits,

Any help would be appretiated.

Cheers,

Dan

seventeen quid for a bleedin' stofen? :gag: fitp will do you one for £3 iirc, or you can get 'em on ebay cheap...

I use the plastic ones all the time, better than the material ones in that it's inherently waterproof, doesn't look silly, and just stays on your flash (won't blow off etc) I guess =/

do lose the things pretty regularly though...

Yeah I've seen both types cheap on fleabay etc but thought I'd link to jessops.

Just can't workout if there is any difference between the two.

The plastic one would certainly be the one I'd prefer to carry about for the reasons you stated, but would I be missing an advantage of the other?

can't think of any, probably eats more light too...

No difference in the light you get, which is 99% dependent on the room you're shooting in. Most of the light is bounced off the ceiling and walls - that's how those particular diffusers work.

The Jessops thing is a faff - flops all over the place and falls off.
