I have been using Photoshop CS2 with Adobe Camera RAW 3.7 and Bridge to inport, view and edit my NEF files from my D200. This system works OK for me and it is the only method I have any experience with, other than a trial version of Lightroom which I could not get on with.

Now that CS3 is available, with a new 4.xx version of camera raw which is not compatable with CS2 there is no longer any updates for camera raw in CS2.

This does not present a problem at present BUT I have a D300 on order !

To be able to view edit NEF files from the D300 I will have to -
1. Upgrade to CS3 (£150 UK) and wait for an update to ACR to recognise the D300.
2. Use Nikon Transfer NX & Nikon View NX (free ?) to transfer and view files with Capture NX (£119 uk) for basic editing and converting to jpeg

Do you think I have sumarised the situation correctly ?
What do you think would be the best route ?

I had a similar problem when I got my D2Xs and the updates took ages, so I got NX from Microglobe for £99

Now I tend to run everything through NX as a batch process using the D-Lighting function and minor sharpening. For studio work, nothing else usually needs doing at all!

For more complex shots though, it's a good starting point and one that helps you decide which RAW images to go back to - hence I'd then use CS because I know my way around that and can't be bothered to learn the clever NX functions of its U-point technology, which others tell me is great = lazy

If you need to do further processing in Photoshop after using NX. What file formats does NX let you save as ? Is it just jpeg or are there other options ?

or get something like rawshooter if it supports the D300 to just get the file on PC and then convert to tif and edit/PP in CS2

I think rawshooter was bought out by adobe about 12 months ago, so there will be no new releases of that product.
 
you have a third option.

Instead of buying CS3

Adobe will update their free Converter at the same time as they do ACR.
So you can convert your RAW files using the free Adobe converter to.DNG and edit in CS2 using ACR as it will be compatible with .dng
You retain the original raw file just in .dng format (the same as nef), ad can do all your adjustments in ACR from the start.
