Which Nikon DSLRs have the AF motor built into the body? I ask as a mate is thinking of buying the D3000 and wants to buy a 50mm too but i am sure that is one of the Nikon range that doesn't have a built in AF motor?

D90 up. With a D3000 he will have to buy the 50mm AFS 1.4G which has the focus motor in the lens if he wants AF

I think its D40 D50 D60 D3000 and D5000 that dont have it built in. Correct me if wrong please :)

So, if he wants to use the cheapest 50mm he is stuffed? He would have to buy a D90 etc? (He wants to stick with Nikon as he has always bought them over the years, compacts etc)

I think if he wants to AF on a 50 1.8 then yes, D90 is perfect

What is the alternative if he really wanted the D3000? Is there a lens close to the 50mm that has a built in AF motor that would do the same job? Portraits?

I stand corrected about the D50 :) that could be a good choice then if budget is tight?

35 1.8 AF-S

35mm is often used instead of a 50mm (in fact on a small DX sensor many will prefer it). However it's not so good for portraits. For that you need a bit more length ;)

Ok, so what lens would you recommend if he bought the D3000? He wants a new camera and the D3000 is at the top end of his budget but has said that he would like a 50mm in the future but i was right in telling him about the lack of AF motor.

Are there limitations of available lenses for the D3000?

I use the 35mm for portraits sometimes, beautiful DoF you can achieve with it and I somewhat prefered the lens to the 50mm. A lil bit more money but I think its worth it :) opinions will vary

For Autofocus he will need to use Nikon AF-S lenses, Sigma HSM lenses, and now some tamrons have micro motors built in, but Im not sure on the name.

Afs DX for the D40x etc. I gave the 35mm Afs DX and it s great. Cant compare it to a 50mm, as havent used one for a while.

Please have a look at here for the lens compatibility with reference to the body you (are going to) choose.

Ooops, see someone else posted info... sorry.

I'm considering D5000 vs D90 and the increased cost of 50mm for the D5000 is a factor!

What about the Sony A290 guys. Would that be a better bet for him as that is around the same price? Would a 50mm be available at a more reasonable price then?

I have that lens and it is compatible with D3000. I have stuck my 35mm on my D5000 in the past and really liked it. It's not too much more than the 50mm and some people prefer it.

Thanks.

Would my mate be better off going for the D3000 over the A290 for pure quality and also with the availability of the 35mm above?

I'd get a D3000 for the wider lens choice (the point above re the 50m 1.8 notwithstanding)!

Thanks, sounds like the right thing to do. The 35mm Nikon AF-S looks good too so i shall recommend him that.

What about if he wanted to change the ISO setting on the D3000, wouldnt he have to delve into the menu rather than flick a button, as on you can on the Canons?
