Nikon 'Picture Control Utility' will not load from either ViewNX2 or CaptureNX2,in fact ViewNX2 will not work at all because of this. :'(

Any ideas?

TIA.

Not sure if this helps but came across it on another website although you sound like you know what your doing, perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree.

"Capture NX requires a NEF file to be open to allow you to open the Picture Control Utility."

That's true for Capture NX2 - but View NX2 should launch the Picture Control Utility even when there's no image at all in the display pane.

It may be advisable to uninstall ViewNX2 and do a fresh download and install.
While ViewNX2 is uninstalled try seeing if you can launch Picture Control Utility from CNX2.

Apologies if you know this:
In CNX2 to launch Picture Control you need a NEF raw file open in the editor window, a JPEG or a JPEG saved as a NEF will not allow Camera Settings to be opened.
In the Edit List expand Camera Settings, go down to Picture Control and in the drop down box ensure that Picture Control is selected (not Non-Picture Control),
go down and next to the Reset button is a square icon with a gear wheel, click on that and 3 options should appear, select Launch Picture Control Utility.

Thanks Kev,

I've tried all that, the Picture Control opens but lock up before the picture is loaded, and and an error mesage appears.

What does the message say?

You could try updating Microsoft .NET Framework.

You could try updating Microsoft .NET Framework.

The message says........

Picture Control Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Blah-de-blah-de-blah

Please tell Microsoft about this problem
We have created an error report that you can send.

DEBUG
SEND ERROR REPORT
DON'T SEND
.

I have tried DEBUG, nothing happens.

How would I update Microsoft .NET Framework please

Run Windows Update - see if there's an update available for .NET Framework.

NB. The reason I've suggested this is that Nikon software is fussy about having the correct version of .NET Framework installed - if it's not, CNX and ViewNX will start playing up.

You can find out which versions of .NET Framework are installed by looking in the registry (caution required!). Here's how:

  • Start button
  • Type REGEDIT in search box and registry will open
  • In left pane, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\ (note versions listed)
  • Exit registry without changing anything
All Nikon software works properly on my W7 machine with these versions of .NET Framework:

  • v2.0
  • v3.0
  • v3.5
  • v4.0

Thanks for your help BTW.

A bit of a long shot but:
The only time that I had a similar message with CNX2 it turned out to be a dodgy photos. I had used a download, recommended on here, to make some adjustments to the photos (I can't remember what it was now) and CNX2 would not start. Once I deleted the offending photos all was OK.

Try taking a new raw photo, put it into a new folder on its own and see how that goes.
