I'm about to buy a Nikon PC lens but which one do I buy, the 24mm f3.5, the 45mm f2.8 or the 85mm f2.8? I'll use it for architectural, landscape and product images. Has anyone got any experience on the differences of the lenses or any sample images?

I can only comment from a Canon perspective, Ashley, having their 24, 45 and 90mm tilt-shift offerings. I'd say 24mm for landscapes and architecture (and occasionally 45mm), 45mm for product shots (and occasionally 90mm) and 90mm for small items (quasi-macro if you like). I'd be pushed to use one focal length for the whole range of subjects you mention.

Thanks Bob, unfortunately my project budget won't extend to all three so I may need to take a punt on the middle ground and the 45mm one. I'd be interested to see some examples of your work with PC lenses if you're able to share?

I do architectural all the time and I would suggest you need the 24mm. Buildings are big things and you generally cant get far enough back!

I've got the Nikon 24mm PC-E. For landscapes and buildings you'll probably want the 24, products the 45 or 90.

I personally haven't used it, but Samyang do a Nikon fit 24mm tilt shift lens which you could look into?
I've seen the Samyang one Stu but have not read any reviews. I think I'd be a little reluctant to screw it onto a D4..!

A fair point..

^Absolutely this.

Although I had the 24mm, 45mm and 85mm PCE lenses and used them almost always this way.

When I rationalised down for other priorities I retained the 24mm as for interiors and exteriors it was the once I used most. Personally I have always (across Canon and then Nikon) always had the 24mm above the others.

One thing with the Nikon 24 you might need to send it for the axis to be modified so you can tilt and shift in the same axis. Think it costs about £80 quid or you can do it yourself. The Samyang is set up so you can do that already. The Samyang is probably similar optical quality to the Nikon, depends if you prefer to stick with Nikon for the warranty or resale value etc.

That's a bit concerning that you need to modify it to get it to do what it says on the box. How do you modify it yourself?
