Well going to San Fran later in year, will be taking the D90 but not wanting it with me all of the time. Looking to buy a smaller camera to have with me the rest of the time, so what way to go?
Been blowing my mind reading reviews about advanced point and shoots, panasonic tz30, canon hv260hs(?), various sonys, these all have better zoom of course, and slip in the pocket but what compromise on image quality and more manual control?
What are your thoughts on this, help before my head explodes!

Hi Pete,
Most of what I have been looking at are 250 / 300 quid the P7100 a bit more. Just very confused.

Depends how much control you want? fully manual control like the canon G12 or more P&S with abit of adjustment like the Sony Cybershot HX9/10 or Pansonic TX30

I've been using the Sony HX5 since it came out and love the panoramic feature it has, ok manual settings are limited with that camera, but as something to just take out of your pocket, play with a few settings and take an image, I've been impressed. Can't comment on the latest in the ranges, but check out sites like

There's a thread I posted recently named "self taught mechanic - my dad" (can't post the thread here because i'm on the app on my phone).

Take a look at the quality, they were taken with a 2006 olympus sp-350 which I have with me right now in Egypt.

It is incredibly compact, fully manual and the image quality is astounding.

The downsides are: slow when writing RAW files @ 10s between shots.

Although rarely sold, you should expect to pay around £65 for one on Ebay.

I did have the olympus x10 and if you can afford it, go for that, it is amazing!

But take a look at the sp-350, it is amazing for the price.

Thanks Pete/Phil,
Think the canon G12 or nikon P7100 would be fantastic cameras but may be a bit bulky (and may mean the D90 went into retirement!), the zoom range and portability of the advanced compacts is appealing, sony hx9v and canon sx260hs looking good at the moment, have read that the later sony with larger pixel count is more noisy, and the panasonic tz30 does seem to have image quality issues!
well back to the reviews, thanks again.

I wish you well Jon as I spent months reading so many reviews it nearly sent me potty. I had but sold on ebay a Panasonic TZ18 - good shots in good light but very poor in poor light.

In the end I bought a Fuji X10 as there were so many on the Fuji X10 thread, on the forum, so passionate about them. But not entirely sure I made the right decision. My TZ18 was usable with one hand to take out of the case, turn on, zoom, etc but the Fuji needs two hands to take off the lens cap (I will lose it one day), to turn on the camera and to zoom in. I know I need to get much more intimately acquainted with it but deep down feel it may get replaced but with what :cuckoo:

So I am looking at reviews again and on one hand the simplicity of the Canon S95/100 but not a great zoom. I rarely use zoom but sometimes feel it is good in case I needed it.

I have looked at the Sony HX9V but there is something about it which doesn't feel right but don't ask me what.

Looking at the G12 and P7100 and the latters 7.1x zoom could be enough but camera a bit bulky again and one handed - not sure. The G12 seems to get marginally better reviews but the LCD is 2.8" versus the P7100 3" and I must be incredibly fussy as I find that tiny extra, with the 3", seems to make using the LCD a LOT better.

So keep us posted on what you are looking at and what as it would sure help me

Get a Canon s90/95/100 - you really can't go wrong - fits in the pocket, takes great phots, fully customisable, does raw, great screen even in sunlight,

no good if you like a VF

it is the opposite of a D90 - I know, I have one!

and I use it far more than my micro 4/3s cameras because it is so small and pocketable.

OMG! had just about made my mind up on the sony hx9v as it gets really good reviews the g12 and p7100 are very very tempting as they are a "proper camera"(you know what I mean) but a bit bulky and less zoom raises question marks. Gonna look at the canon you have both mentioned now.....just to add to the confusion! LOL
