Hi all,
I've got a Nikon EL body here that I won on eBay, which was not as described unfortunately. I have no use for a non-working body, so happy to give it away to anyone who wants to have a tinker (or to take apart for fun, or to make a novelty light from, or whatever). I thought I'd ask on F&C since it's the target market! It looks like this:

$_57.JPG

Good points:
  • all the parts seem to be there, and I imagine they can be harvested for other similar era Nikon cameras (film wind, eye piece, flash shoe, film rewind, ASA dial etc.)
  • the film back area seems to be relatively clean and undamaged
  • it has a metal bladed, vertical focal plane shutter that is marked but seems to be all working and fully intact, and mirror up mechanism seems to work okay

Bad points:
  • I'm not sure if power is getting to the camera - the battery status light doesn't work, and although the battery compartment looks clean (and there is some needle movement, I think), all the shutter speeds fire at the same speed
  • there has been some sort of impaction on the shutter speed dial/top plate, so the shutter speed dial feels unlinked
  • generally lots of brassing and impaction marks on the body
Let me know and I'll create an official thread in the Freebie section. Postage on something like this will probably be £2.80.

As I said in the wanted post, the plan is to gut it and a lens to convert it into a lamp with a GU10 LED bulb. Thinking about it, I might even see if I can find another Canon lens mug and a Nikon body cap so the 'lekky bits are in plastic rather than taking them through the metal body! Always fancied fitting an ES-F L lens to a fillum Nikon!!!

thats a turn about then ,,when the first kwanons had nikkors on them ! :)

Not quite relevant to this thread but I once had a (relatively rare I think) Nikon EL2 which is essentially the predecessor to the FE. It was a real beauty, and worked impeccably. Definitely an improvement over the EL too.

That's precisely why I bought the EL to try, because I like the FE and FE2 so much. Shame it didn't work out!

Thinking, we have a fairly good classic camera place in the bottom end of town (Camerex) so I might take it in there and see if they want any of the guts for spares (and get them to do a more scientific gutting than me with some small screwdrivers!) Might see if they've got anything dead as well! Will post shots of any finished articles as/when they appear...
