Hi all,

Im thinking of doing some Macro photography and I'm trying to decide between these 2 lens:

AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens, Closest Focus 0.6ft

AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED, Closest Focus 1ft

There seems to be about £150 differnce in the price between them. Since they are both 2.8, I was wondering that since the 60mm can get in closer because of the minimum distance, would I get about the same magnification on them? In which case I should probably go for the cheaper one, unless anyone had a reason that I should get the 105mm??

I shall be using this on either the D600 or D800, which I intend to buy within the next 2 weeks :)

I've had both, I had the older 60mm 2.8D but basically it's the same job. Having to focus in closer is not a good thing btw, it means to get 1:1 ratio, full macro, you need to get in closer to your subject. If your subject is a skittish insect, for example, you have more chance of scaring it off by having to focus closer. Another con is you are at risk of blocking out more light. The 105mm allows you a little more distance, while still allowing 1:1.

Both are excellent for other purposes, like portraiture or just general shooting.

The 105 also has VR, so IMHO it's worth the extra cash. It is a brilliant lens.

I sold mine only yesterday, coincidentally, as I'm looking for a longer macro - decided on the Sigma 150mm 2.8 OS. That will alow even more space between me and the little mites when needed.

Thanks Cagey :)

I think I will stick to the 105mm :) Incidently how much do these typically go for second hand?

If I go for the d800 then I'll probably buy the 24-70mm 2.8 first, then the 105mm Macro.

If I go for the D600, I'll get it with the kit lens and the 105mm Macro.... Decisions decisions.....

Just waiting for Her Majesty to send me my cheque :) (Tax rebate)

Before shelling out, can you borrow one (meet up with someone local and try it?)

The 105mm micro d I have works brill on the d300, but had some manual problems on the d300s... Prolly user error but worth trying them out.

105mm pics on the siggy link if you're interested.

Nice pics ecniv, especially like the album cover :) Im inclined towards the 105mm the feedback on here seems positive, and I think the length would serve better for potraits, especially since I already have the 50mm 1.8 lens.

Hopefully I can pop into a camera store and try it out

The closest focus of the 105 is much less than 1ft.

It is precisely 1 foot. You wont lock on, even in MF, any closer than that.
