Looking to get a reasonable macro lens that won't break the bank.

Kit up to now comprises Nikon 5100 with stock 18-55, Tokina 11-16.

So any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Mel....hows the Tokina

Look out for a Nikkor 60mm f2.8 G AF-S ED Micro...nice small inexpensive macro which will be great for watches!

Hi Steve,

Tokina lens m8, is spot on, getting great results. Have also been experimenting with flash, with a decent diffuser I'm sure we'll be almost there with the internal shots.

Should have mentioned my main interest in a macro lens was watches:)

Thanks for all the reponses so far, will look at reviews for all of them. When your new to a hobby, can be a real mine-field finding the right kit:bonk:

Assuming, it's mainly watches and so not stuff that is going to be scared off, you might want to also take a look at the Nikon 40mm macro and the Sigma 50mm 2.8. The latter will be manual focus only but that shouldn't matter in the slightest for macro. One of the sharpest lenses I've ever owned and really wish I hadn't sold it.

I picked up an old 105 f2.8 Nikon for 275 a while ago. Very pleased with it. I looked at the other suggestion mentioned too, and all seemed worthwhile. This was one of my first shots with it

I think this is the key bit. I genuinely cannot remember ever reading a bad review of any macro lens. It seems that nobody knows how to make a poor one.

These images were taken with a compact, these are the sort of close-up shots I'd like to achieve, only better quality;)
