My 300mm f/4 AF-S has a squeaky AF-S motor and I've recently noticed fewer and fewer of my shots are sharp, so I think its time to get it looked at.

So the question is where is the best place to send it? Need it back before RIAT, so about 2 and a half weeks from now.

Thanks in advance.

If not Nikon then Fixation

I'd send it to nowhere else but Nikon, and it takes as long as it takes unfortunately.
If RIAT whatever that is is important, get a back-up.

Another vote for Fixation. Give them a call to get an idea of turnaround time.

acs, cheers, had seen that but want to try and gauge which is the best choice for quality of workmanship and turn around time from posts on here.

Craikeybaby, will do, cheers. Currently saying 5-6 working days on their website, but will confirm on the phone.

joxby, RIAT is the Royal Internation Air Tattoo - http://www.airtattoo.com/ might be able to borrow a 300 2.8 so fingers crossed.

Anyone have any experience of Nikon's own place or LH Lehmann Ltd? Fixation seems to be the place to go so far, although I've read some mixed reviews...

Cheers,

Cheers,

To replace the rear element of a 20mm AF-D..

Lehmann's couldn't help me..

Fixation never answered my emails

Nikon UK (Surrey) returned my email with a ballpark quote for the repair within 24 hours.
I accepted the quote, they then asked me to download a repair form from their website on which I detailed the repairs I required, and send it and the lens to them.
They inspected it, decided I was correct and repaired it, sent me an email to say it was repaired and to ask for payment.
I paid, it came back in the post perfecto....all told 2 weeks, and I never spoke to a single soul.
I should point out that if you are unsure what exactly is the problem, they will inform you at the inspection point to see if you wish to proceed.

Tbh, I do not believe Nikon to be any more expensive than anyone else, and I trust them far more than any 3rd party "authorized repair centre"
So its really just a question of economics as to whether you should proceed with a repair.
The whole experience of using Nikon for a repair was pretty quick, pretty simple and stress free..:)

apart from the paying bit..

Whenever we have a problem with a Nikon lens we send it to Nikon at Kingston. The process is as described above and their workmanship is exemplary.

The only issues I have are in comparison with Canon at Elstree, who are cheaper and MUCH faster (2-3 days instead of 2-3 weeks), but that's not a concern for you.

Ive always used Fixation where possible for my Canon gear and theyve always been good. I had an old body i bought from MXV (before they sadly expired) which had a years warranty that developed an AF issue. Lehmann's had it for a total of 6 weeks over two occasions and it came back with the same problem both times. Twisting arms with CPN got Canon Elstree to look at it and they eventually fixed it on the third attempt. Admittedly it was an intermittent fault but apart from the penultimate fix at Elstree it always failed shortly after i got it back (and it didnt work at all on both the occasions Lehamnn's had it...).

So, its Fixation from me but id recommend giving them a call.
