Nikon Lens jammed need help please.

Nikon FM2 .

The lens release button works fine and the lens rotates but it stops just short of full rotation and detachment , so what,s gone wrong ?.
Has anyone experienced this and solved it themselves, i have a feeling the mirror may have dropped somehow .

Any suggestions appreciated even a good and trusted Nikon repairer.

Its a 20mm Nikkor Ai lens on an FM2 and its going nowhere fast ! The lens is from the same era ie the late 1980s.
Weird thing is i have used it many times before and it was working perfectly . Could it be a cranking and not firing before putting on the lens ?, Are there any procedures to avoid that would give a jammed lens ?.
I have no recollection of how it happened.
