hi all how do you know if your nikon fit lens is full frame or not please,is there letters on the lens

DX on a Nikon lens shows they are for cropped sensor camera. As for other makes ie Sigma.

All i did was google full frame lens for sigma so imagine it would come up with other makes as well. Have to say I am not keen on Sigma lenses in general I got rid of my 170-500mm Sigma version it was rubbish, but on the other had my Sigma 70-200 is pretty good . From personal experience I found Sigma lens vary too much to rely on getting a sharp copy.

The one in your link is f6-f6.3 which I would have thoughts about irrespective of the mm length.

If its mm your looking at I can suggest getting to 420mm using Nikon lens instead

Take a strong look at the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens instead. Hold on a minute before you say "but its only 300mm"

What you wont find this tip anywhere but works is adding a teleconverter (I used a Sigma 1.4 TC) to it. this gives a range of 70 -420mm which is pretty close to what your after. This also means your not going as high as f6 with the sigma and greater range of mm as well. That mm length is for an FF camera so on a cropped sensor like the D90 you should be getting very close to the 500 mm mark anyway. Havn't worked out the maths for that

Why do I say this? well the "throat" of the inner workings are deep enough to not foul the TC which is about the only lens that allows it. Yes top of the range lenses allow TC'S but we are not talking about that here.

The reason why you won't find this recommendation anywhere is because of the f stop used means it will either work with auto focus or manual focus. But this in my opinion is a small price to pay for the same result more or less

I have successfully used this combo many times when I wanted that bit extra length. Of course you could go up to a 2x TC but the light loss onto the sensor is too great for all but the brightest sunlight which is why i got the 1.4 TC.

Cost Nikon lens 70-300mm VR lens = £399
Sigma 1.4x Tele conv =£200

Little bit cheaper than the lens in your link

Below this combo ,note the lens is at its shortest 70mm

Photo using this combo taken from other side of large wild life enclosure (hand held). without this combo this picture couldn't be achieve as the wolf was too far away

The Nikon lenses with DX on them are for cropped sensors but if you had something like a D800 the camera would detect it was a cropped type lens and adjust itself accordingly.

I have been looking at getting the D800 and in cropped mode ,ie using a DX lens the MP drops from 36mp to 16 mp.

The better the camera ie D800 the more demanding it is for high quality lenses. There is no point in spending out £2000 on a camera and getting a £200 lens.

The lens I showed could be used for FF cameras as I said all depends on what camera your going to put it on.

Like everything to do with photography research is the key, there is so much good information out there, bit like buying anything, what some people are happy with others wouldn't touch with a bargepole. Also it depends if your like me a serious hobby photographer or a professional demanding the best or just a snap happy type.

I have spent more hours researching the D800 on the net -on youtube-and mags that you would have thought possible, Taken in all the pros and cons to decided should I get or not, its driving "her indoors" mad with the time spent.

Maybe it would be more helpful answering Iwols question in the first post than taking a snipett from my posting and putting some silly picture on a new posting. If your going to quote then quote the whole statement not nitpick bits from it

If you want to make a useful suggestion or tip then go ahead but what you posted is infantile. Its the quickest way to have a complaint lodged against you with possability a time suspension from the forum.

OP's question had already been answered.
Just found it a bit unfair to warn against a single brand, that is capable of making fine lenses... but point taken.
