My girlfriend is looking to upgrade from P&S to something a bit more serious. Despite me being a Canonite she is surely trying to break me by developing a liking for the Nikon J1.

From what I've read the J1 seems to get mixed reviews, what are people's thoughts on it, and what alternatives are there?

My wife was in the same boat - she has been through countless P&S cameras but never found one that gave her consistently 'punchy' pictures. She saw the red Nikon 1 J1 and bought it (probably for the colour!) and it has turned out to be quite a find. I use a Fuji X100 and after a recent trip to Marrakech we were very pleased to see that the Nikon took some similarly stunning photos on the 'Auto' setting that she always uses. Focussing is brilliant and colours have the vibrancy she was looking for. She has since added the red 30-110mm lens and a red leather ever-ready case. I'm not usually the jealous type but this Nikon is making me a little bit envious....

All in all it is a fab camera with superb focussing and punchy colours. I too read all the reviews and now realise that they should be taken with a measure of salt - not everybody ponders over 100% crops or worries about sensor sizes - especially not my wife!
 
Main problem with the 1 is the limited collection of lenses plus their size. Not sure what a J1 has over a GF3 let say or an EPL3 which are smaller have bigger better sensors many more lenses and are cheaper to boot.
