Am thinking of buying a new lens (14-24 or 17-35 for the D3), and possibly getting it from Hong Kong. A site I've used before (Kea Photo) says the 14-24 comes with 3 years international warranty, the 17-35 comes with 1 year international warranty.

Is this truely valid, does anyone have any experience of a lens going wrong and getting it sorted under Nikon international warranty?

call nikon and ask, then you will know for sure.

I bought my 70-200 of these guys, and they have a 3rd party company covering warrantys that you register when you receive the lens.

I've registered but fortunately for me never had any issues with the lens. I also have it covered with UK insurance as well though :)

I've gone for the 14-24 in the end, and got it from purelygadgets.co.uk who have the best uk price at the mo. They also have an 18 month warranty offer so seemed like a good deal to me.

I've recently bought two lenses and a filter from Kea Photo; excellent service!

As far as I remember there was an article in a photo mag last year and it stated that Nikon will NOT repair grey imports in the UK under warranty they would need to go back to the seller for repair.

Sigma UK is the same unless you have paid the UK customs duty when importing AND have proof of such, I believe Canon are the same although I might be wrong.

Best to be aware of this when purchasing from Hong Kong as those meagre savings might not be that great when faced with posting a lens back to Hong Kong and the long wait for return too.

Someone over on AvForums has had a problem with his HK bought Sigma lens and it will cost him £74 plus P+P to have it repaired in the UK even though it is under warranty.

Mike.
