Yes
I have a D5200 and got a used SB 600 speedlight, I assumed that when the flash was put onto the camera it would overide the onboard flash and be active, unfortunately it does not.
I have looked online and gone into the camera sttings but cannot find a solution, hopefully it is something simple that I am overlooking. The flash works when the test button is pressed, any help appreciated thanks.

Your assumption should be correct as far as I know John, but there are a couple of scenarios that spring to mind. I'm assuming you're not in the "No Flash" mode that's on the program dial of the camera? Also, is the SB-600 in slave mode i.e. waiting for a flash from the command flash before it fires?
Every Nikon camera and speedlight I have just work when you plug the two together, usually.

Is the camera on 'Green' mode?, changing to 'P' or 'A' might stop the pop up flash from popping up. Paul could be right in that the pop us is being used as the pre-flash for the SB-600. I don't know much about that 'gun' but there must be something under custom settings in the camera that places priority on an external flashgun.

What mode are you shooting in? I dont have that camera, but some cameras in the basic auto mode will pop up the onboard flash.

Sorted.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I didn't see any Icons so I cleaned the contacts on the camera with a dry cotton bud, put the flash back onto the camera and a camera icon appeared on the flash which hadn't previously.
Tried it again and it worked. :)
