Here's the craic:

A friend has offered his Tamron 17-50 2.8 (which I know will be in excellent condition) plus £70 for my as new Nikon 24-120 VR...

I love my VR though yes the 18-200 may prove better if I could replace it with that - The length is very useful. He did say I can have the Tamron for 230 but I think I can get it cheaper, don't quote me on that.. hence I haven't contested that offer yet.

But... I do want, and he knows this, a constant zoom at that range.. the Nikon 17-55 2.8 obviously being on my wishlist along with the 70-200 2.8 VR.

Thoughts thoughts... i'm going round in circles trying to work out what to do. Some reviewers suggest the 24-85 AFS as an excellent cheaper alternative and at first I thought I could have his tamron plus the cash and use the cash to get the 24-85 for only a bit more.. but of course in my tired confusion I was clouded to the fact that I wouldn't need most of that range thanks to the 17-50 2.8 although i would be missing the rest of the range and the 70-200 2.8 VR would be needed even sooner.

arrrghhh

No worries, thanks for your post though dude. Any more for any more?

Hi - If its any help I had the 24-120mm VR and concluded as the reviews (& Joe) its not one of Nikon's best
The Tamron is well respected but I wonder if you have ever seen / held the 17-55mm f2.8 you hanker after? - it is a huge piece of glass (I tried a 24-70mm known as the "beast" & just couldn't see myself lugging it about for a whole day! The 17-55mm is a bit lighter but not much so for the same reason I wouldn't have one despite all its merits)
HTH ... Paul ;)

OK... moved on by the desire to get Jas´s d70s as a second body I have traded the 24-120VR for the Tamron 17-50 2.8 plus £70 and will get it tomorrow. I'll try to post my thoughts soon.

Yeah - typical that someone sells a d70s - just after I take the plunge and buy a new one!

Still, am well chuffed with mine so far. And as it's my first DSLR, glad I went for 'new'.

;)

Ok.. got it... here´s some very very rough and random shots i made earlier to test the lens... only levels, cropping and a bit of usm applied. Yes early days yet... all shot at 1/90 2.8 except the photo with the bad shadow across the face which was 5.6 at 1/350 sec.

Not the greatest photos in the history of the camera or the most scientific test ever at all but just some examples.

that's a very smooth out of focus effect, I like it. Looking forward to getting mine in the not too distant future!
