Hi

Currently have a D90 but will be upgrading to D7200 shortly.
Current lenses are:
Nikkor 18-105 Kit Lens
Nikkor 70-300
Nikkor 35mm
Tokina 12-24

I'm looking to replace my 18-108 lens for something a bit better. Was thinking the 16-85 -- I rarely use the higher end of it and would take the 70-300 if I knew I was.

Is the 16-80 any better than 18-108 ? Ken Rockwell says not.

Are there any other brands I should consider?

To mainly shoot landscapes, architecture, close-up transport, general walk-about lens really.

Any help appreciated.

Be aware that you will not be able to control the aperture of the new 16-80 on your current D90, so if you decide to get this, wait until you have your D7200.

Also I'd not really pay too much attention to what KR says ;)

I would get a second-hand 17-55/2.8. It is a damn good lens on DX.

Also worth looking is Sigma 16-35 1.8.

Honestly, none of these 3.5-5.6 zooms are a solid upgrade for you if you already have 18-105. 16-80 2.8-4.0 seems to be better, but I think it is expensive for how it performs if you compare it to the mentioned lenses (I must add according to reviews, I only played with it shortly in a show room).

Hi Karl.

Hello again - It just so happens I may have a 16-85 for sale.

I gave up on the Nikon 17-55 2.8 some time ago for weight reasons and although it was a damn good lens I cant say that I've missed it since converting to the 16-85.

OK the 16-85 cant do 2.8 but that aside it does produce quality images.
