Right, this is something that has been bugging me for a while and I thought i'd ask for clarification here.

Nikon make DX (crop) bodies and DX lenses for them.

If I bought the DX 55-300mm lens (assuming DX crop is x1.6) and put it on to an FX (full frame) body, would the lens then effectively become 35-187mm?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if a DX lens on a DX body at (Eg.) 35mm would give the exact same results as an FX lens on an FX body at 35mm.

50% of me says yes because why else would Nikon release DX lenses.
The other half says no.

PLEASE HELP ME TP! Lol

Short answer no :)

The crop factor on Nikon is 1.5 (Thom Hogan states 1.52 but hey ...)

The difference between a specific DX lens and an FX lens is the image circle - i.e. the opening at the mount. On DX it tends to be smaller than on FX.

Focal length never changes between formats - what changes is the field of view (these are not the same thing). The focal length of a lens is a physical property and the sensor/film type is irrelevant.

Answering the 55-300 q, no it will still be a 55-300 but it will vignette dreadfully due to the image circle.

Only the field of view changes, not the focal length.

Excellent, I can finally put that one to bed. Cheers everyone.
