Im currently using a D40 now, had it for about a year, the thing bugs me though, having to manually focus my 50mm lens and having only 6mp makes tight cropping a no no, also I have a line of dirt down the middle of my pics that I cant get rid of with either a rocket blower or swabs and eclipse fluid :bang: ( is a clean by a shop or Nikon more comprehensive than swabs and fluid? )

I can just about justify spending nearly £600 on a new camera but is it worth it in the technical dept for me to change to a D90, Is it that much better than a D40?

Digital SLR Photography magazine recommended going for the D80 as the D90 has just been released so the D80 will drop in price and the AF on the D80 is faster than the AF on the D90.

Matt, I have gone to the D90 from the D40x because of some of your frustrations and love the camera. It's extremely easy to use and has a specification very close to the much more expensive D300. It works brilliantly with my 50mm too.

Some on here will mention the video feature on it and how it's a gimmick. Ignore that, as it's an extremely competent camera in the first instance. The video is something of a 'free' extra to have a play with when you fancy it and does not compromise the camera.

I've moved from a D50 to a D90 (so I had the benefit of the AF motor before anyway) but I would say it's been very worthwhile.

The high ISO performance is superb, and the little extras all add up (the LCD screen is amazing, for a start)

The answer is, yes, it is worth going for the D90. It's a world of difference.

I didn't know about the AF speed difference between the D80 and 90, though.

It is true that the D80 is probably one of the best bargains out there, as all the other models are pretty new and the D80 is still streets ahead of even the D60.

On another hand, the D90 higher ISO quality is so much more better than the D80's. I went from an 80 to a D300 (D90 uses D300 as well) and even at ISO800 on the D80, image noise started to creep in. Not so in the D300. You can probably push to ISO 2000 before it gets too annoying.

Just out of interest do you see much real life difference between a D80 and a D300 at lesser ISO. Just in terms of IQ, better viewfinder etc. or maybe there is little difference?

There's always a risk of some image noise on raising the ISO at all on the D80, as do I lot of motorsport and on dull days, I needed to. I've often used ISO400+ on the D300 and there isn't a loss of quality at all. The IQ is definitely superior on the 300.
