Got the camera out today after a shamefully long period of non-use to do a pano stitch. After the usual mild panic of trying to remember how to change settings as the sun drops towards the horizon, I got onto the job of taking the photos, but the focus system was behaving differently.

Usually, I can set it to AF-S and a single point of focus with single shot drive, I'll then backbutton focus on my point of interest and after this I'll not focus again during the various photos making up the stitch, with me only using the shutter button to take each photos.

But this evening, if there wasn't much detail in the shot, such as the sky, it wouldn't take the shot. I would have to reallign to something with more detail and I could hear it whirring/clicking away as if it was hunting for focus before allowing me to take the shot. I'm not sure why it's now doing this, when previously it's been fine?

I got around it by going full manual, but can't figure this one out.

In your settings there's a way to set the priority of the shutter button, either release or focus. At the moment, it sounds like yours is set to focus, change this to release and the camera will fire without focus confirmation

Cheers. I've got the camera setup as back button focusing, so I'm guessing it shouldn't be doing this? I'll double check that something hasn't changed back with the shutter button by accident.

Could the AF assist light be causing it?

Sorry i wasn’t clear. Bb focusing wont affect this setting. This is about AF confirmation - I think it’s in drive / release settings

Apologies, me as well. I would have disabled shutter as a focus when I set it to back button focusing when I originally got the camera. I do remember playing around with some settings last year, so perhaps I've changed it back by accident. About to check now. Cheers

Under A4 the AF activation it's set to "AF-ON" and not "Shutter/AF-ON", so that looks good.

Under A1 the AF-C priority selection is is set to "Release + Focus", but this shouldn't have any impact anyway as I was in AF-S mode when shooting.

Under A2 the AF-S priority selection is set to "Focus" and not "Release". I think this could be the problem?

EDIT: Just tested it and it looks like the A2 setting was the problem. Changing to "Release" is allowing me to fire off without acquring focus. Thanks for your help, all sorted. (y)
