Nikon D810 err code this morning

A couple of months back I got a D810 but haven't had much chance to use it (only taken around 50 images since I got it). I took it out this morning and the first images were black and followed by err code. I tried a few things such as turning the camera off, taking the lens off, removing the battery then putting it back together again and using mirror up and bulb mode to check the mirror was raising and the shutter opening. After about 6 black images I managed to get it working firstly with over exposed images in bulb mode then correctly exposed images. It now seems to be working fine with no repeat of the err code since early this morning.

Looking at err code in the manual it just means 'camera malfunction', whilst this could be shutter issue it looks like it could mean anything. Since getting home I've updated the firmware as it was C1.01- now its C1.12. Looking on the internet it could be dirty contacts between the lens and camera but I don't have the right equipment to clean them. Any ideas whats required?

When I first received the camera whilst testing it out in the house the err message appeared the first couple of images and then worked fine. Being a new camera to me I just thought it was something I had done (I did take off the lens and put it back on/swap to another lens). I'm hoping its something simple like dirty contacts but thought I would ask on here first if anyone else has encountered this issue.

Had this a few times mainly with my D800. For me it was the contact between the lens and camera. If you look at the front of the camera without a lens attached, there is a small spring loaded tab that contacts with the lens and pushes round when the lens is attached, this was slightly seized and sometimes would not return to position when changing lens, typically my manual focus Zeiss. Might be worth a check as it’s something I had not realised happened during lens fitment!

I put a drop or 2 of light lubricant in to the groove the tab sits in and gave it a good back and forth for a minute or 2. Been spot on since.

A pencil rubber is one of the easiest ways to clean contacts.
 
It will be the lock on the fStop ring on the lens!

These are pretty abrasive… I use a
Q-tip with very little isopropyl alcohol

Using a pencil rubber a few times over the course of several years will do little damage. I wouldn't call them abrasive!
I wouldn't use the ink end of an eraser - no need to use it.
Pretty much any cleaner works to be honest - white vinegar, alcohol (vodka is good enough), meths.

That will be something stopping good contact between the lens to the camera as mentioned above, it really doesn't take much. I'd use a lens cloth as that's probably all that it needs unless there is an issue with the fstop ring on lens as mentioned above.


Ohh and if the error occurred when using live view, after cleaning the contacts power on the camera and if the error is still there press the shutter button as it may have be still mirror locked.

Thanks for all of the replies. So far I've had the issue occur when using two different lenses (24-70 and 200-400). Both lenses are working fine on a D750 so don't think it's a sticking aperture ring on the lens. None of the lenses have an aperture setting ring (like AF-S D lenses) so it's not that being see wrong.

Thanks Jason, I was thinking it's something simple as it's been working fine since this morning so unlikely to be a mechanical issue with the shutter. I will give the lenses and camera contacts a quick wipe with a cloth. Problems are usually something very simple or user error, it's just a shame Nikon covers so many things under one error code and reading their manuals make it seem so bad.

Not exactly sure what you mean here. There seems to be a spring loaded ring on the outside of the lens mount. That turns when pushed and returns back to its position ok. None of my lenses seem to move this tab (AF-S G lenses?). There is a tab on the inside of the camera mount that's looks like it's the aperture arm. I've not touched that as I don't think it should be touched.

I will give the contacts a wipe and see how it goes. Im off on a trip for a couple of days in the new year so will get time to use the camera. Since autumn I've just haven't had the time when the weather is right to get out.
 
My step dad just came up to me with his d800 with the err message! His lens didn’t have an f stop ring! 24-120mm so I popped the sd Card out and back in and it’s fine now

That makes sense that is only effected my Zeiss lens then as that is manual focus and aperture control which obviously requires contact from this tab. never ever checked on my AFS lenses and never had the problem

Out again this morning, no 'err' code this morning or throughout the week testing it on and off. Looks like all it needed was a wipe of the contacts. Thanks for everyone's help, HNY.
