Is there a cable I can use to remotely connect the above two items so I can take the flash off the camera?

Off Camera Flash (OCF) cord or I note Nikon call theirs a Sync Cord.....on the surmise it is the same thing just a different name???

TBF if you want to take your flash off camera, cables became old school years ago. In your shoes I'd sell the SB700 and replace it with a Godox flash and wireless transmitter.

I use a flash so infrequently I would be wasting my money
You can trigger the sb700 wirelessly using the built in flash of the d810 - would that suffice?
Yes, it would. Noting my line just above this, my lack of use of the SB700 has made me forget that I believe I can use it as a light-triggered slave. I shall get out the manual (y)

The manual is hopeless if I remember correctly

Well, I thank you greatly for that. Just tried it and it's exactly what I want. A quick bit of experimentation reveals that while the slave has to pick up some light from the camera flash, it really doesn't need to be very much; I blocked off all but a sliver of light and it still triggers the remote flash.

You wouldn’t be that much out of pocket.
A genuine cord s/h is gonna cost you about £30
You can sell your flash dependent on condition for >£100 (if you get top rate you’re in profit)
And the Godox kit is around £150 for a much better solution of somewhere between -£10 and £20 nett.
