Probably been asked thousands of times before, but im still trying to find the right camera for me, and the canon eos 30d has come into the picture.
So: nikon D80 or canon eos 30d - which would you go for, and why??

Cheers Ben

Both really nice cameras - have you held both of them as that can play a major part in how happy you are with your camera. I'd go for the canon myself, one of the main reasons being that I do quite a lot of low light stuff & canons noise handling is excellent.
Do you own any lenses or anything at the moment & would it be cost effective to change systems if you do?

Beg to differ. The difference, if any at all is marginal.

Both cameras are excellent. Go try them out and see what feels best.

King.

I think if you took 2 identical pictures wtih each camera you wouldnt notice the difference with the eye

You have to see which "fits" you.

And.. dont buy the 30D if you can wait a month or so the 40D is going to be fully available and has far more toys and features.

:agree:

Or if you really want a 30D, buy a 40D and I do you a straight swap

I have just had a play with the 30D, and it feels a lot better than i thought (compared to the 400D)
There is something about the D80 that i like though, which makes it really hard to chose between them!!
Is the 40D going to be a replacement for the 30D, or is it just going to be a better model? I did notice that the specs are better on it! Does anyone know roughly how much it is going to be?
^^ lol at whiteflyer, sounds like a top deal mate :)

The 30D was a relatively minor upgrade from the 20D, but the 40D is quite different - higher resolution, weatherproofing, live preview, self-cleaning sensor (if it works), etc. If you can hold on until the initial high prices drop (and there are some reviews, just in case of a bug), I reckon it would be worth the wait. ;)

i apoligize for quoting you but that to me says it all ,if d80 feels better to you then i'd say thats the 1 to go for
you've done the right thing in comparing different cameras and found the 1 you like the most ,
it is important that a camera feels right ( just like a women)
as for thinking about future replacments there always introducing newer versions so waiting for future new models is pointless when you're buying a good camera such as the d80 or even the c!"£?n .:nikon:

If there was a right answer as to questions like these there would only be one company making cameras.

Unless there are certain features or accessories you need that one has and the other does not, it really just comes down to personal preference.

If you cannot decide between the bodies look at the respective lens ranges and see if one has better options for your needs, or works out cheaper.

As for the 40D, it looks very nice to me with a number of very attractive features over the 30D. Although being a new model it will be starting at around £900 in the UK as the list price for the EU is €1299.

With it being only $1299 in the US hopefully Kerso might be able to do it for a decent price though.

Michael.

Ye, i have looked around at that, and they both seem like comparitive prices for the lenses i want, but the canon I will need to buy a CF card, as i usually use SD, but that doesnt make any odds really!
I do like the spec of the 40D, but I suppose it is a bit more expensive, and would compare it more to the D200 (at least price wise!!
