Nikon d80 lens advice

I've just bought a Nikon d80 body and have the loan of an 18-135 DX Nikon lens.
Any suggestions for a cost effective general purpose lens, I seem to get on with the zoom lens on loan, my photography will include some technical close ups, portraits and mainly general pictures.

Any suggestions and any tips about where to look?

Hi John, a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 makes for a great walkabout lens on the D80, I replaced the 18-135 kit lens on mine with the that and a Nikon 70-300 VR and they made for an excellent combo.

Would a SIGMA Auto Focus UC Zoom 70-210 fit and work, it has the nikon mounts and I have the chance of one quite cheap?
