Hi all, it's been a while!

I have recently inherited a D750 and I'm having real problems using it. No matter what I do, it's insisting I use the flash - even on the brightest of bright and sunny days.

At first I thought I must be doing something wrong (I've only used Sony before and this is very different, there's a definite learning curve) but now I think there's a metering problem.

I've reset all the custom settings, tried all the lenses I have available, tried shooting in full auto, and it happens almost every shot:
  1. The viewfinder display shows the flash icon (flashing)
  2. I focus, it still flashes
  3. I press the shutter
  4. The shutter sticks open displaying ERR until I press the shutter release again
Very occasionally I can immediately take a photo successfully after this happens - without changing any settings.

If I pop up the flash, it works fine - just as I'd expect.

I have double checked the serial number against the shutter recall and it's not affected, though this seems to be a metering problem rather than the shutter itself.

Servicing would cost more money than I have right now.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can narrow down what the problem is (and maybe even fix it)?

You say you've reset the custom settings but have you reset to factory settings?

That's the first thing to do.

Just checking is this built in flash ?
Is it a 7500 rather than 750 ?
Have you tried turning the flash mode to ‘off’ ?

Thank you - I didn't realise they were different, I have now and will see if that helps.

Yes it's built in, yes it's a D750, and yes, it didn't seem to make any difference.

Check the top left dial outer ring is not set at mirror-up mode. Put it on S to start with for a single picture.

What lens is on it? If it is not a manual lens and has an aperture ring, make sure the aperture ring is set to the maximum aperture.

would consider doing a firmware update to ensure its on the latest and it will effectively re-set the camera, it would also overwrite whats there in case it has a bug in it

Have you tried other modes? 'Green' auto seems always to pop the flash up, but I'd have to check as I don't use it as a rule. Try P.

Actually, try 'flash off' mode first (next to the green auto mode). It does exactly the same as full auto apart from suppressing the flash. And set the release mode to S. Both suggested above, sorry should have read the replies more carefully.

Also check the Live View selector is set to still rather than movie.

Als John says try P mode, also try setting the iso to say 800 and see if that changes anything. In auto cameras can sometimes lean towards flash a lot.
Have you got a local friendy camera shop? Some are very good and will have a quick look to see whats going on if they are quiet.
