I am hoping that somebody can provide me with some constructive advice on a problem I seem to be experiencing when using the above lens on my Nikon D7100.

I predominately shoot rugby images, I set my camera up to take JPEG images at ISO 800 on aperture setting at f2.8, AF-C, d9, matrix metering. I also have the VR setting activated on the lens.

I always stand behind the posts to get facial expressions etc.

I have recently started using lightroom to edit my images etc and I have noticed that the images are not as sharp as I would expect.

Could this be due to the lens, ISO setting or the other settings?

All comments appreciated.

Although I dont shot sports but more wildlife.

Whats your shutter speed and are you handheld or using a mini tripod. With the current light, I'm finding with mine I need to up the ISO to get the shutter speed up and get the sharpness. Is this a new set-up or have things changed, you may need to fine tune your lens to your body.

Also, IMO I don't think Nikon are the best for JPEGS, would you have time to shoot in RAW. When I changed from my Fuji XT1 to the D750 before Christmas I was dissapointed with the JPEG's compared to Fuji.

Hi Simon

Thanks for your reply.

To answer your question I have had the camera for about 12months and the lens about 5 months. I am wondering whether it's because I have the vibration reduction facility activated.

As far as shutter speed is concerned when I do shoot in shutter priority I am using the 1/focal length rule (including the crop factor for the DX) I don't use a monopod as I find it somewhat restrictive.

I mainly shoot in aperture priority F2.8 at ISO 800 so the camera determines the shutter speed, however I am going to give Shutter priority a go next weekend and compare results.

Cheers Dave!

Came across this which may be useful - what do you think?

I shoot Canon Keith, so I can't really comment but it seems a good starting point.
When shooting football I use continuous focus, use centre focus, metering mode dependent on lighting, up the ISO if required to achieve a decent shutter speed. I also try to find the best position to give me a nice background and sit low.

Ditto! But I do egg chasing!

I can't see that switching VR off would help if you are hand-holding, quite the opposite!
The 70-200 VR should provide good image quality so unless it needs a micro-adjust it should be fine for the job which just leaves your settings.
For moving (sport/birds in flight etc) I would have the camera on AF-C and probably set to 9 or 21-point active AF points - if you are spot on when following movement you might choose single point AF ... I'm just not that good! The next priority would be shutter speed and that depends on the speed of movement of the subject, I would say 1/250 minimum but it may need to be higher to capture a sharp image with fast or erratic movement.

Looking at your pictures the exif is showing 1/3200 as a shutter speed, is this right, am I reading it right from Flick'r?? If so, is your shutter speed to high with the VR on. The rule of thumb would be 1/200 plus crop of 1.5 for the DX camera, so 1/300.

Thanks for the advise guys. VR gets deactivated on Saturday! Also going to shoot at Aperture Priority at F4 as it seems the lens is at it's sharpest at that setting. Let's see what happens!
