Yes
hi, I'm noticing a difference in sharpness when shooting directly from live view or using the viewfinder.

This is using autofocus. Live view seems to have less focus area - and specifically areas away from the centre aren't as sharp. Is this what I should expect?

thanks

That is strange, I could understand the opposite if your focus fine tune was set wrong, then you would get better focus with live view.

This way around I can't help, but interested to see what feed back you get.

Why are you using live view?

Auto focus in live view, on most DSLRs uses a much inferior contrast based AF system compared to the phase detection system used when using the viewfinder. Stop using Live view unless you really need to. I only ever use live view (zoomed in) for manual focusing. If you need to AF, use the viewfinder, or you're limiting the capability of your DSLR.

Live view AUTO FOCUS.... not using live view to zoom in and check manual focusing. Live view AF sucks.

No, not in most real life situations, with just the one big focus area in the centre, but if you make sure that has something proper to lock onto it will focus well. Isn't that the reason it can be used for calibration of the AF fine tuning?

Merry Christmas!

Correct, and Merry Xmas to you too :)

However, it's hit and miss. It relies on image contrast.. it's slow... and really shouldn't be used unless you literally can't get your eye to the viewfinder.
