why is long exposure NR best turned off? I've recently acquired a d7100 and haven't turned the feature off...

Because it doubles the time your camera is out of action for. If you take a 30 sec exposure, the camera then takes another black frame 30 sec exposure, so your camera is out of action for very little gain.

Particularly important to turn it off for star trails!

anymore settings people change

Lots, extra sharpening in case I just want to use the JPEG from the second card, menu + and - I turn around, FN button to top item in ''My Menu'' which is set to picture control, but tbh there's loads more, but it's all personal preference:)

Depending on what you shoot, look at back button focussing. Not sure of the menu changes needed.

i also:-
turned off the focus assist lamp,
turned off the beeps
set card 2 to backup
raw only
colour space as aRGB
focus point wrap around to on
viewfinder grid on
lcd illumination on
bracketing order to under, mtr, over
release locked with no card (IMPORTANT, why this is not default is beyond me...)
also add your name and email to copyright fields

i often changed the # of focus points to 11, this sped up focus point selection

i then added all changed items to my menu, so if i did a reset i quickly knew what items to change

Hi Iwols,

If you are not ware of what aRGB or sRGB means, have a read around "colour spaces" and "colour management". Im not sure how much you know about post processing / image formats / colour spaces, so it may make your head hurt initially, but it is worth knowing imho.

I don't have my old nikon manual to hand, but "focus point wrap" means when you move the focus point around the viewfinder, when you get to the left edge and press left it jumps to the right.

Apologies for the delay.

the only thing i would change is the d7100 itself ,two brand new bodies in two months ,6000 plus images with less than 50 being useable ,both bodies developing menu/review and focussing issues and finally getting a full refund before going totally insane .
and i might add i,m not a newbie having had a d60 d50 d80 d90 d200 d300s d7000 over the years i do know what i,m doing .totally put me off nikon and have now switched back to canon totally :bonk::bonk::bonk:

Can I ask where this setting is??

Edit: Nevermind, found it in the "Controls" sub menu...

'Easy exposure compensation'... gives life to that rear command dial that make it sooo much more fluid to use
