Hi all,

I have inherited the above, Lens says its compatible with Nikon AF.

Doesnt seem to be focussing, in Auto... I can manually focus in Manual but still seems quite blurry.

Have I got some settings wrong somewhere ?

Thanks all.

I know nothing about Nikon but I think the 28 -80 is a full frame lens??????

If the lens has a aperture ring set it to the highest setting eg. f22, f32 etc.........Should then AF if lens is capable. There should also be a lock button to keep at the aperture setting. Not sure on these older models but there maybe a toggle switch for setting camera to AF or MF. Check this also. On my newer Nikon its on the front, close to the release button for mounting or de-mounting lens.

Right, whacked lens onto F22 (locked)... camera body is set to AF...in this mode on any setting P A M S ... if I press shutter it tries to focus can see lens go in and out etc but still blurry in viewfiner. On any of those settings I dont actually get a fire. If I set body to M on any setting P A M S then I can get fire no problem.

Lens says Nikon AF on it...

Here is the lens.

If the lens is moving it sounds like it is trying to autofocus. What are you focusing on, could be that the object is to close to the lens? If I remember rightly, when the autofocus is set to AF-S it will not fire unless something is actually in focus.

ok, im at work at the moment so havent had chance to have a good play...

Ill try that later on and report back.

When you look through the viewfinder, is the text at the bottom of the viewfinder blurry? Where it says aperture, shutter speed etc?

If so, you might need to adjust the diopeter so the view finder is in focus - there is a little notch or knob next to the viewfinder.

Does this solve the problem?

I only say this as you mention you can focus in manual but it's still quite blurry.

That was the first thing that came to my mind too.

Is the focus locking so you can fire the shutter. If you look at the photograph taken on the back screen, is the image sharp? So it may just be the viewfinder?

Doesn't sound like it, he says furthe up:

I would also check to check the AF settings. is it on AF-S? I think this can be done through menus.. camera should beep when in focus.. use the 5 squares in the viewfinder for focusing. make sure you are also not too close to the subject as each lens has a min focus distance..

There is a setting in Nikon menus requiring focus before shutter fires. Seems to suggest the Lens isn't focussing

Sorted it, Battery was running flat I hadnt noticed. Seems I have a dodgy battery.

All focusing perfect now :)

Thanks

Good stuff.. Great wee camera.. I have had to sell my Nikon gear a few times and always go back to a D70 as a starter.. I like the two jog wheels..

Yes very easy to get a long with, my first DSLR. Collecting lenses at the moment.

Just ordered me an ND filter... only a cheapie from a very popular site on the Internet.

Just getting started.

Doesn't matter, an FF lens will work just fine on a crop body. The only downside could be that FF lenses are slightly heavier than crop only ones (for a given focal length/range.) The D70(s) will also AF with older, screw driven lenses as well as newer AF-S ones.

Glad you're sorted.

yep but it also means its not a 28-70 lens ;-)

It is. A 35mm Dx lens will have exactly the same field of view on a crop body as a 35mm Fx lens on the same body. The crop factor is only really relevant when switching between different crop factors and systems.
