Yes
evening guys and girls. havnt posted in a while, bit of a newbie question but can you use off camera flash with the d7000?

any help/tips usefull.

cheers Rob

Yep - you can use the CLS system with any of the SB series of flash that support it
You can wang a radio trigger on top, and have that trigger any flash you want, so long as you have a pair of triggers and the right leads

The D7000 also has a "commander" mode to fire off camera flash using the onboard as a trigger (I think). Haven't used it yet but there's some info if you google "D7000 commander"
I'm off to read my manual :)

Thats how you trigger the CLS - simply select the right channel on the camera and SB Flashgun, and the rest is fairly automagic

hi guys, many thanks for that, could i use any aftermarket wireless triggers and flash? probably wont use the set up that much, so dont want to fork out too much at the begining, thanks Rob

For starters use the d7000 pop up flash in commander mode and a decent speedlight ie sb900/800/700 etc off the camera. Unless your off camera flash is out of the line of sight of the camera in which case the infra red beam probably won't trigger it you shouldn't need to purchase a radio trigger etc. I'd certainly see if the simple set up does what you want first before laying out on extra gear.

A cheap option would be to use the D7000 in flash commander mode and just use a cheap flashgun on slave mode. The on-camera flash will pop up and fire a low powered flash, which in turn will trigger any flashgun/head that is set to slave but won't be powerful enough to affect the exposure :)

i will double check that this will work tonight if you like? i have an SB700 myself as well as some cheap yongnuo flashguns :)

I have a D90 / SB700 and this set up works perfectly so I am sure will work exactly the same on your 7000. Only extra consideration is to lower the flash output of your on board flash if you don't want that flash to light your subject (ie if you want to achieve a side-lit effect). There is a plastic thing Nikon sell to cover over the commander flash if needed, it fits into the hot shoe, or you can lower the flash output in menus.

I think in commander mode the output of the inboard is flash is so weak it won't affect the exposure - unless I misunderstand the book. I only have an sb400 so can't test

Cheers

Mike

I can't say I've ever noticed an affect on exposure whilst in command mode, it really is a weak pulse of light :)

The most annoying thing about commander mode is remembering to turn it off, I always forget then want the onboard camera to be set to TTL and miss shots
