Nikon D600 - anyone got one?

Good morning!

As per the thread title, has anyone got a D600? How do they rate it in use? I'm very tempted to get one to run alongside my D700. All my lenses are FF already and TBH, the D700 does all I want/need and more. The extra pixies are tempting though, if only to allow heavier cropping and still keeping pixel dimensions large enough for A3+ prints! Not that fussed about video - if I ever decide to get into that area, I'll more likely use my Fuji HS30, if only for the extra zoom range in one lens.

Most interested in High ISO performance, AF speed and accuracy and the credibility of the in camera HDR feature - do they look natural or overdone? Is the effect user controlable?

Graham, most of that thread is people bitching about the price of the thing rather than talking about the performance. A couple of useful links to some high ISO examples but I am hoping for some first hand user experiences from people I know.

Prices seem to be dropping towards £1500 now rather than the 2 grand (or close to) that it was shortly after launch. I'll probably stick with just the D700 unless the D600 gets down to closer to £1000 than £1500!
 
From my brief use of it:

ISO in low light was as good as the D700 in real-world use - rigorous testing will probably show you they're different but to my eyes they're pretty much the same. Great detail due to the extra MP and the DR is great. 24mp was impressive (and more useful than 36mp to me) but still more than I need. Like the D4 and D800, images tend to have a green tint - certainly greener than a d700.

AF was the achilles heel for me. Its reasonably fast and generally accurate enough but the AF points are clustered too close to the middle. A step backward for D700 users. For my style of shooting this was awkward and the main reason I chose not to buy in the end.

I prefer the d700 viewfinder (despite not being 100% coverage it seems larger) and controls generally but the U1 and U2 buttons are great - something that Nikon's flagship cameras could actually do with imo. A dedicated AF-ON button is missed - the AF-L button can be assigned but isn't positioned ideally for my tastes. I was worried about the body being too small or too light but its fine.

Ultimately its down to personal taste. If you can, spend some time with one. I borrowed one for a day - you could hire one if you don't know any owners.
 
As I said in post #3, I'll probably hold fire until the price drops a bit further. I don't need another FF body or the extra bells and whistle (or pixies) the 600 gives over the 700. As a rule, I tend to only ever use the centre AF point, so that wouldn't be an issue for me and I also use the shutter release butto for AF rather than the back button, so again, no issue for me!

Only had a brief play in the shop when I tried one on - basically wanted to see how convincing the in camera HDR is. Not as overcooked as most people tend to do in Photomatix or whatever but not convincing enough to be a reason to fork out 1 and a half grand! Once it's down to closer to a grand, I may weaken but for now, sensibility is overruling my GAS...
