Yes
I am looking to purchase an entry level DSLR in order to take up photography as a hobby. I've been looking at either a Nikon D60 with the 18-55 VR lens or Canon 1000D with the 18-55mm IS and would appreciate any guidance. In terms of feel I am happy with both.

To be honest it dosn`t really matter where you start, both cameras are backed up by a good system of lenses and flashes and other gear so there is no...this brand is better than that one...best bet is to go with the one that you feel most comfortable with and that you feel is easy to use.

I agree.

Both good cameras and if there isn't one that feels more right than the other than flip a coin.

Do you have any idea where you see your photography in a year or two? Think about that as it may make your decision for you.

From a Nikon POV I love my D60VR its fantastic... perfect size, some great lenses out there for all budgets and a really great start!!

im a nikon man but you have to go and compare yourself... the feel and layout will decide it for you and you can only do that in a camera shop, side by side..

Do a google search for reviews of both of these cameras & see which of them has the features which suit your needs. Fof example, do you want a camera with live view or not, as the 1000D has it & the D60 does not.

Most importantly though, as others have mentioned, make sure that you hold both of them to see which one that you are most comfortable with.

Personally I prefer the Nikon but as always it is down to personal taske and feel. As camera's go they are both very good for this end of the market and will both take decent photo's.

The best bit of advice is to find a local shop and have a god old feel and hold of them. Play around with the menu's as well as I didn't find the Canon () ones as easy to use but other will say the opposite. Don't forget that you are also buying into a system and so look at all of the potential extras as this can mount up price wise quite quickly:bang:.

Don't discount second hand either as you can get a good bargain. Oh and also look at the Sony line.

Good luck with the choice.

Go and have a feel of them in a Jessops or similar. I compare the D60 and 450D (there was no 1000D in those days) and the D60 won me over straight away, felt far better in my hand.
