Nikon D5200 Colour Feedback

I'm upgrading from a D3100 to a D5200.

From purely online shopping I was fancying the nice red colour for a change as my 3100 was black.

Can anyone who has seen the cameras in RL possibly help me out with regards to colour choice?

Does the red colour look ok? I'm concerned it may look cheap or tacky (the finish I mean) and wonder if I should stick to traditional black.

Hard to tell from photos online and everywhere I go in person seems to have no stock.

I cannot really help you on what it looks like as I've not looked, but I'll say this more as a note of caution when it comes to reselling on the used market, special coloured camera seem to be harder to sell on and sell for a lower price apposed to the standard black
 
Consider that your lenses will still be black.

Personally, I find red or silver cameras ugly, but in the end, the outside hardly matters, right?

As a side note, I would also consider upgrading to a better camera. 3100 -> 5200 makes very limited sense, unless the main feature you need is the moving lcd.

Thanks guys, the point about the used market is something I'd heard elsewhere too so thanks for that.

Regarding the upgrade, I had thought that this was a reasonable step up for me as I have only been photographing with dslrs since 2010.

However, I just noticed on Google news that the d5300 is announced and it comes with features I'd like to use so getting the 5200 just became less likely.

The colour question is still valid however but you've swayed me towards black right now :-P
 
Colour is a personal choice of course & as mentioned above, won't make any difference to your images, bur you say you've been using a dslr for 3 years. Do you use A/S/M (rather than Auto)
I'm only asking because the mid range/higher end bodies have 2 scroll wheels, rather than the 1 thumb wheel & are quicker & easier to control, without delving into the menu.

Unless you need GPS etc, you might want to consider the D7000?
 
Personally for me id stick with black.

Have you had a look at the D7000 ?
 
Thank you for your help guys. Does that last advice regarding the D5200 also apply to the d5300?

I spent last night researching the d7100 and it's canon equivalent, I believe it is the 70d.

A lot more than I wanted to spend but if I can grow into it, I will consider going higher than the d5000's series.

Since I have no lenses I've opened my mind to canon too.

Regarding A/S/M I do use A and S modes but I prefer playing with the aperture and do sometimes go back to auto with flash disabled when I'm walking around snapping and not specifically setting up for anything.

I do agree with a previous poster who said they preferred black having had a look about.

I have a red 5200 nikon it stands out I had a D80 before

I want to thank all of you guys for your advice on here and would like you to know that I'm following it. I've settled on the idea of the d7000 which many of you advised me to get.

You gave excellent advice and after much research i've now been watching prices and looking on ebay for the last few weeks trying to grab a second hand bargain. It's a difficult task as people are consistently bidding used d7000 s up to the price you can get a brand new one at curry's when you factor in the current cashback offer.

So I'm currently weighing up getting one of those or seeing if prices change in the new year, somehow I doubt they will though.

I would agree with this comment, go for red if you don't mind virtually giving the body away when you replace it, 90% of people are going to avoid tacky oddball colours, so its a hugely reduced market when you resell.
