Hello I have just bought a Nikon D5100, I hope to be able to pick it up later, someone I know had the D3100 and he let me play about with it for a while so I am not too unfamiliar with Camera and the different bits on them.

My question is, I have been told by someone that I am wasting my money buying a D5100 and should just buy a D7000 as I am not a complete beginer with Photography. So should I just send back the D5100 and ask my Dad very kindly to order the D7000 for me?

'Someone' is talking rubbish, the D5100 will take exactly the same photos as the D7000, it's just a smaller, lighter body with less controls. Your level of competence with a camera is irrelevant, get what is right for you.

Sorry I am probably am talking rubbish I just didnt want to get something which I would have to upgrade anytime soon. I did want to buy a D3100 as I took some really nice pictures with it but the 5100 I got for the same price and it seemed the better option.

If you had zero DSLR camera knowledge before you started "Playing with it" (fnarr fnarr) still puts you at the beginner level - you perhaps started learning some of the basics. A 5100 is still 2 steps up from a 3100 and has the same sensor as the 7000 so takes the same photos - body and a couple of things are the difference. If you feel you have learned everything there is to know about the 5100 you will probably want to upgrade to something a lot better than the 7000.

Stick with it - I have one too - so we both know it makes sense :D

i only really no the basics of the camera i spose anyway so the d5100 should hopefully do me for a while. How long have you been playing with yours?

Sorry I meant to say how long have you had your camera or been using it!

I asked for that!

It will have been two weeks this coming Saturday :D

There is a lot of information on here and elsewhere on t'interweb. If you like I can try and find some of the links I have found so far if you want me to.

I know!! it tooks me ages to think of that reply  But then I thought it was a bit rude and I dint want to sound rude

found som of the bits on here bout the D5100 but not really had a load of time this week to look or even to unwrap my new baby she is still all wrapped up.

i was more wanting to no if I plan on doing portraits then can i do this at a decent if no pro type level with this camera? I go it cheap so iam happy with that though it dint come with a lens so will be getting one this weekend hopefully. Have lent one from my mate who ha sa 35mm for portraits and laughs

Well, there is a portrait selection on the dial - that would be a good starting point then you could gradually work up from there. People always say that it's not the camera that matters - its the person behind it so I think our 5100's will be fairly capable of a good portrait shot or two.One thing I do know tho' is practice, practice and practice - I am still on a steep learning curve - but, hey, it's fun :)

Hope you get it unwrapped (the camera I mean :D) soon and start finding more about it.

Why is it that no matter what camera you have - someone always suggests getting one better?

I just posted an intro thread about whether I should stick with my bridge camera or get a DSLR (of some type) - general consensus was that the Fuji HS10 was getting pretty good images and upgrading wasn't really a necessity.

Plenty of people would love to have something like a D5100.

Just go out and enjoy it, they all take great pictures. I've gradually 'progressed' from my D40 in 2007, through to a D7000 and now a D700. I looked at some prints from my holidays 3 years ago taken with my D40 and they're just as good as the other 2, even printed at 8' x 10". I would suggest that if you've cash left after your D5100 that you spend it on lenses if you need them, a 50mm f1.8 is an awesome portrait lens on a D5100 or any other DX camera and will give you a lot more options to take more creative portraits than the kit lens.

thanks for the replies - well i am going to have a go of it at the weekend when I hopefully get a lens, either by lending one or i might just buy one they seem cheap enough at the moment. Will look out for the 50mm if that is better than the 35mm. I just wanted something that is going to last me a while and i was told that I should get a D7000 as it will last be a long time. but ai am happy with my purchase and intend to get some good pictures out of it.

The 35mm 1.8 is the one to get. 50mm awkward focal length - too long for normal, too short for portraits. The 35 is the most owned lens for DX. You can have just the 35mm and nothing else and be happy.

I had a look at your post and I love those pictures you have taken, they are really good.

Yeah I am happy now with the D5100 and if I get better and better then I can work my way up the D7000 was a little out of my money range without the help from Dad
