Nikon D5000 v D3100

Hi all

Sorry - I'm after advice again!

I was looking at getting a D3100, but I've just noticed the D5000 has dropped significantly in price at one of my local shops. I think it's available for £369, which puts it in the same bracket (or cheaper) than the D3100.

I have to make a pretty quick decision on this, as the D3100 has a cashback offer which expires in under two weeks.

I hadn't even considered the D5000 so my knowledge of it is zero. If anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them.

I'm new to SLRs, so I'm really just looking for a good general camera, mainly for outdoor photography.

Any info gratefully received!

To be honest, the only advantage with the D5000 is the pull out LCD (which I couldn't do without) and the slightly faster burst mode (4 fps, which in itself has to be bettered by others in its class). Also, I think the D5k offers bracketing that the D3100 doesn't...

That'sa bout it though - everything on the newer one is better!
 
You can get the D5000 for £500 with the 18-55 and 55-200 VR lenses at Jessops :)
 
Unless you can get the D5000 much cheaper than the D3100, I would say get the D3100 because its newer
 
The d3100 is newer and that would suggest it should have a better sensor. The d5000 has more functions (i couldn't be without bracketing for example) and an articulates screen which in my opinion is only mildly useful. They're actually very closely matched. Neither would be a mistake.

Yeah, the D3100 is newer, so I was focusing on that. However, I'm sure this place had the d5000 cheaper than I'd seen one.

Will do some thinking. To be honest, I would prob have got a Pentax k-r if it wasn't for the front focus issue anyway!
