Hi
I’m part exing my D5300 for the D500 (lowest shutter count I can simply find, I’d buy new if I could find one). I need a super fast lens that will complement the D500 for taking freeze motion shots within a 5-7 metres distance from me laid on the floor; AND 1 metres from me which will be dog crushing treat shots.

Which lens do you experienced close action photographers suggest, Im needing to buy asap.

Shots will be taken in a massive barn studio that will have continues and flash lighting setup. lens needs to help me as much as possible achieve this freeze action shot….

Im open to Nikon and other brand fast lens.

Thank you.

If 300mm equivalent (200mm on DX body) is sufficient reach then the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 FL might worth a look. Great AF acquisition and tracking on the D500 (y)

Thank you so much for the advice. I’m new to this my friend so want to give myself the best start with best camera body for my two types of shots. One at 1 metre (dog catching treat) and 5-7 metre dog jumping over jump. GC should I stick with Nikon or go for a compatible brand? Thank you for your time.

I've only ever used Nikon lenses but have heard good "real world" reports on the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2.

I loved the f mount 70-200 fl-e. Imo it's the 2nd fastest focusing lens nikon made, behind the 200 f2. I used one with the d500 (and d5 for that matter) and I wouldn't look elsewhere for sport / action stuff. Optically & af on those bodies was awesome. I think it's probably the best 70-200 made for dslr's

The VR2 version of the 70-200 Nikkor would also be a considerable step up from what you have used before, but the FL 'E' is another level.

No experience of the Tamron or newer Sigma lenses. D500 is 8-year old tech now but is still an awesome camera, reluctant to part with mine.

For cheap speed, a 50/1.8 is hard to beat. IIRC, the D500 is screw driven AF, so an older f/1.4 might not be beyond the budget if you need the extra speed.

Nice rendering lens but found it a bit slow focusing for action work.

Hi, do you mean this when too refer to the “70-200 fl-e”

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR

After a lot of messing around for the last couple of weeks I have ended up with a low shutter count Nikon D500 ,I got it as a back up for my Olympus OM1 and 300mm f4 but I find myself picking it up first . So far only got a Nikon 24-70 vr and a Tamron 70-300vc lens but I’m impressed in the first couple of days of use .. not whether to go for a Nikon 300 f4 + tc’s ( used to have one with the 1.4 & 1.7 ) so know how good it is , or a Nikon 200-500 with the sigma 150-600c also in the sights . Got a few reasonable shots already with it ..
Like it so much I treated it to a SB 900 flash from Facebook marketplace today

Typically, when shooting this type of shot the high speed capture is achieved by using studio flash and the lens would be locked to a 'slow' aperture setting of f8 to retain decent depth of field in the final shot. The flash is what freezes the action not the speed of the lens.

Just been browsing lens choices for the D500: the Nikon 200-500 weighs circa 5lbs and the sigma 150-600 weighs circa 4 lbs more reach less weight and it’s tuneable via the hub hmmmmm

Having owned a Sigma 150-500 and OH has had a Sigma 150-600 'C', the Nikon 200-500 is definitely the more 'usable' of the trio. Found the Sigmas a but cumbersome, and the ultimate 'social-distancing' lenses, particularly if you are panning.

I never got on with the Sigma either, the Nikon 200-500 was great though.

my other choice which I have owned and used before would be a nikon 300mm f4 if ..not the p.f version coupled with a 1.4tc and /or a 1.7 tc very sharp lens but prone to focus motor failures ??
