Has anyone came across this issue?
I purchased the Nikon D500 a couple of weeks ago and the Clock icon has been flashing since i got it.
It should have stopped blinking when the battery was in for a while but it hasnt and whats more my pictures are all random dates from 2016.

Cheers for the replies.
I think i have solved the issue.
Turns out you can buy an ac adapter for the internal clock that charges it for 6 months for a princely sum of around £50.
So that got me thinking.
I decided to fully charge one of my batteries, put in in the camera and leave the camera on for 24 hours.
This appears to have charged the internal battery in the same way an ac adapter would have.
I must admit though that its pretty crappy of Nikon to try and squeeze and extra £50 out of consumers in this manner.

Just to clarify.
I had set the date and time but it just kept resetting when i turned the camera off and on again.

Thanks for the update. I’d have returned it.

That may still happen.
Although i will see if it has been cured.
Im working purely on the theory that with it being a new unit and the fact Nikon have an adapter to do the job then they probably come with a low charge.

I’ve never really thought about the internal battery before and how it’s kept charged. It makes sense to me that it’s charged by the removable battery when in use. When the camera is turned off the internal battery charging stops. If it didn’t we would all be complaining that the removal battery goes flat whilst the camera is off.

The £50 external power cable you mentiin probably isn’t meant to only to be used to charge the internal battery, just a constant power source for the times so need it. It replaces the function of the removal battery therefore also charges the internal battery just like you have found the removal battery does. It sounds like the camera has either sat unused your quite a while or the internal battery is discharging faster than it should. A quick bit of googling seems to say the internal battery is a capacitor rather than a rechargeable battery. How true that is I’m not sure.

Yeh it charges the D500 battery while its in the D500 from a wall socket but thats what got me thinking that the internal battery must then charge from the Battery so i just put a fully charged one in and left it on.

If it’s new return it. It doesn’t make any sense Nikon selling an mains power adapter just for this job. If they did people would find out and never buy Nikon again as its ridiculous to need to buy a £50 accessory just to keep the internal battery charged. It you needed to do this the accessory would be supplied with the camera. It makes far more sense that the internal battery is charged by the removal battery when ithe camera is used rather than needing to buy an adapter to charge the internal battery separately. I’ve been using Nikon for about 5 years and I’ve need had a problem with the internal battery or ever needed to charge it myself.

If you are getting this problem in a new camera return it as what’s to say the internal battery won’t discharge itself quickly again in the future.

I’ve just looked at the manual for my D810, this is all in there. I’m guessing it’s the same for the D500 and other Nikon’s. Basically the internal battery is charged by the removal battery OR the power adapter. No need to buy the power adapter to do the internal battery charging. I would think it should come charged and frequent use keeps it topped up normally.

The part about ‘charged as necessary when the main battery is installed’. There is nothing to say if the camera should be on or off when the charging takes place.

Seems to be working fine now but will keep an eye on it for the time being.
