:help: What do you all think about the Nikon D50 and the Canon 350D one of them will be an upgrade for me from the Canon S2 IS and my first trip into the Digital SLR world

I can only speak from a point of view of being a 350D owner. For me it's a great little camera as you can have a great deal of control over it, but it's not over complicated, as well as being a well mannered first step into the world of DSLR's.

I'll leave to D70 to the nikon guys and girls as they will know more than I.

Hope that helps

The functionality is probably similar on both cameras and asking peoples advice is always going to be subjective. The best thing you can do is go to a camera shop and try them both, how they feel in your hand is almost as important as what it can do. That's exactly what I did last year when I bought mine, I went with an open mind and came away with the Nikon as it felt better and appeared more sturdily built.

Agree with the above, you should try them because the 350D is quite small. The only advantage of staying with Canon for you is that you will be used to their menu system.

I came from an Canon Ixus and found the menus very obvious as they were so similar.

Thats what I was going to say - except for the last bit ;)

I really can't see you going wrong with either of those, but as has been said - go and handle both. The 350D is a really small camera, especially without a battery grip, which might be an issue for you. That apart -they're both excellent.

Yes exactly as above - I got advice about "feeling" both cameras & decided the Canon felt too small & went for the D50 - Canon do seem to have a wider choice of lenses & accessories though but it's roundabouts & swings IMHO ... Paul

Have felt them both and must say the D50 feels better ......I was more thinking in terms of the technical side of what they both can or not do.....also cost of lenses and assesories etc.......I can get the D50 Body for £322 which leaves around £180 for the lens, as I really cannot afford to go much over the £500 mark..so now it it is mainly what lens ?

Cheers everybody so far...

I would have said the D70s would be closer to the 350D in features, i may be mistaken though (wouldnt be the first time ;)) !

But read the above articles, as there are some big differences between the two

oldboy2000 - I presume you are looking to buy soon (?) I ask as I got my D50 in April (06) and got the D70 "kit" lens (18-70mm) rather than the standard D50 one (18-55mm) - I also bought a Nikon 70-300mm (G version)
I have decided to change to one lens & am waiting for a 18-200mm but they are like rocking horse **** (unless you pay over the odds)
So I will be getting rid off both lenses when my new one comes into stock - if you were interested in both or even the 18-70mm only I could let you have it now (would have to hold on to the bigger one until the new one arrives or I couldn't use the camera) Both could be had within your budget (just!) - Just a thought & sorry to hijack your thread sort of ... Paul

Same advice from me, go down to local shop and try/feel them. I got the 350d after liking the feel and in a DP review it just came out a nats dodar better than the D50. Think, without looking more MPS, but thats not everything.

But, if you can get the D50 body cheaper than the 350d, giving you more wonga for a decent lens, that might be the route to go.....would any one else agree??

they're very similar and both excellent. the only thing that really seperates them is that the d50 is far cheaper :)

imo it also handles far far better, has better colour straight from the camera and of course it has spot metering

and I would say that in my experience the advantages of the Canon are:

better high ISO noise handling, higher pixel count, more lens options available.

So, in summary it seems:

350D is a good sensor in a reasonable body
D50 is a reasonable sensor in a good body.

Must agree with SammyC here
The D50 seems to be a great little camera in many ways and if you like it's appearance over the Canon you probably won't go wrong buying it.

Don't chase megapix as your only reason for deciding.:suspect:

If you have large hands(any bigger than a 12 year old:lol: )you will battle with the small size of either bodies!!At least you can fit a decent grip to the 350D

Do a careful comparison with noise at high ISO (read 400 +).
The Canon kicks serious butt here.

Lens options also much bigger with Canon.

If I were you(and I own a 350D and a 20D)I would look for a 20D if it is still available and grab it!!
It is a 30D BARRING 1 OR 2 small features and a bigger LCD.
This should serve you for many years

i'm sorry i know it's late and no offence but i am getting a little sick of hearing this. it is very true for the older nikons like my d70 but the d50 has much better noise control. having used it i'd say iso 400-800 is fantastic but above that the canon has the slight edge.

Well I must admit that I would never say the difference is massive but the CMOS v CCD issue will give the Canon the edge, but I suspect (as Noah says) it is only an edge.

:)

Well guys I don't know but would appreciate to be enlightened:thinking:
How does the D70S and the D50 compare in terms of noise because I built my opinion on the D70s as a good friend of mine owns one.

i have the d70 and a few mates have d50's and the d50 is far better at controling noise, still not as good as canon but much better than the d70. i've heard many argue that the d50 has the best noise control of all the nikon dslrs but then i've not used any others to compare it to myself.

i didnt mean to sound off in my previous post it's just that it seems there is an unfair pre-judgement of older nikons on the newer ones :)

Noah
Please let me know if you can how the D200 compares with the D50 noise wise.I should expect the D200 to be much better but then it sounds like it isn't?! :suspect:
I am considering getting myself a D200 (heaven help us , don't tell my fan club:lol:   )but that will only be once I have both 1D's.
I think the 24-120VR lens will make this a good all round system?
Failing that and the wallet not being thick enough for both 1D's by next week I might go and get myself a 50 and see what all the fuss is about!

Why would you want to get a Nikon if you already have a Canon?

When comparing noise you also have to look at the detail retained in the image. A lot of lower noise cameras produce images that look like water colour paintings, especially at 1600 & 3200 ISO.

Sammy fair point I must concede:notworthy:
All I can say is that at least then I have a fairly objective (to the uninitiated)reason because I can say that I have both...
But alas this would only serve a purpose for the uninitiated:lol:

SDK^ Please explain that concept .
Does anyone HONESTLY ever need ISO 800 PLUS more than maybe 5% of the time??:suspect:

i wish i could help on the d200 but alas i have only held one not actually shot one. from what i hear it is very good with noise but still behind canon, as far as d200-d50 i couldn't tell you but as i said before there are many brave comments on the internet grapevine about just how good the d50 is, but then thats the internet for you.

there are members here with d200's so i shall leave you in their competant hands :)

Thanx for that Noah
I still would like to hear from anyone who could assist me with the d50 and 24-120vr lens issue

Maybe I should just go and buy a d50...

well... if you can afford the d200 its a better cam. 2 control wheels, better af, more pixels, better controls layout, better build, brighter viewfinder... etc

someone here has the 24-120vr and is pleased with it, but i cant remember who...?

Hi Noah
Sure, will definitely agree d200 has to be better but this noiseless d50  baffles me a bit:naughty:
Mate of mine got himself the 24-120 with his d70s but I was just curious if this lens isn't overkill on a d50?:bonk:
