Nikon D50 - shutter about to fail?!

Three times now I've had the camera do an odd thing. I'll take a photo and instead of the clunk of the shutter I get a slow whirring sound for about a second and the shutter closes but doesn't open. The top LCD on the camera flashes the 'Err' message. Removing the battery for a few seconds and turning it on again corrects the fault - the shutter opens and you can continue shooting.

I think the body has done at least 10,000 shots now - could it be the shutter mechanism going home? If so, how expensive will it cost to repair?

Could be the shutter mechanism, only way to be sure is to get it in for a checkover. Not still under guarantee is it, hopefully?

I doubt it. I've had it nearly a year now. If it does it again, I think I'll have it looked at. If it's going to cost a fortune to replace I might look at buying a new body, but I'm hoping it won't come to that...

I'm not sure what the anticipated life of a Nikon D70 shutter is but I'd guess it's at least 50K actuations, so 10K actuations is nothing.

If it's under a year from new, it should still be under warranty.

Ok, thanks Marcel. I'll try and dig out the receipts and take it back. I've been wanting an excuse to buy a new compact camera to replace my battle-scarred Fuji, so if the Nikon has to be sent off for a few weeks then that's what I'll do!
